There will be fewer lifestyle and make-over shows, and more arts, current affairs and factual programming, the broadcaster said in a new Statement of Program Policy.

Commercial rivals have long argued that the BBC indulges in too much copycat programming, citing shows like "Pop Stars," and say it has "dumbed down" content.

"We're mindful that lifestyle programming has been overdone," said the spokeswoman.

Having lived in both countries, I can say that Britons, on average, have a better command of the English language, know more general knowledge and are more cultured. On the other hand, Americans value education more, have a superior work ethic and have better business sense.

As for TV, British and US both have pros and cons. The pro on the UK side is that even commercial stations don't have as many and as frequent ads as they do in the US. The pro in the US is that 'good' programmes are shown much more often. When I lived in the US, I could watch ST every night without cable. In the UK, it's only once a week.
