They should notably stumble onto several pieces of a monstrous illithid plot.The illithids are planning to rebuild Penumbra. To this mean, they are building several artifacts whose function is to suck all life and energy from a prime material plane to power a powerful spell. See the Manual of the Plane, the Bright Citadel legend in the Shadow Plane chapter: that's basically the same thing.But to build these artifacts, the illithids need lots of power, magic items, servants, etc. Grabing all these resources while staying discreet so as to avoid inquiry by the other races, who no doubt would be totally opposed to this project, requires a huge diversion. Preferably several diversions.I have already one. As there are no drow IMCW, the illithids have though it would be a good idea to bring some from another world. The arrival of Lolth's servants, and thus their wicked goddess, would cause lots of chaos and confusion in the elven populations, who would not know who are these night-skinned brethren who hate them so much. But if this can disorganize the elves and allow the illithids to stole what they need among the pointy-eared folk, this is not sufficient. They need other diversions for other people.
