My 1st DM did not use it and I cut my teeth on 2nd ed for AD&D as a DM so it took a while for the PCs to level up. I find it easier to reduce xp handed out if you want slower progression. Divide xp by 2,3,4, or 5 if you think going up a level is to fast.</blockquote>
