Is it worth the feat slot? How often has it come up in your games?

If you like to counterspell, it's worthy.

Particularly for counterspelling casters that are of a different class without having to use Dispel Magic all the time.

To put it simply: when your sorcerer or wizard starts counterspelling enemy heals it suddenly seems a lot more worth the cost.

One of my players had a cohort (a bard I believe) whose sole purpose seemed to be counterspelling every spell I threw at the party. Ready and counterspell. Drove me frickin nuts.

An anti-mage Sorcerer can make good use out of Improved Counterspell so they don't have to waste their Dispel Magics and Greater Dispel Magics when they could use a lower-level slot. But that's a pretty small character niche, if you ask me.

And Counterspelling Cure spells is just mean!

For the serious counterspeller, the Battlemagic Perception spell from Heroes of Battle is highly recommended. It permits counterspelling as a free action.

The Kalamar PG has the Antimage feat which gives a +4 bonus to dispelling and counterspelling... Give that to some henchmen sorcerers of the BBEG with Dispel Magic who do nothing else but ready and counterspell ;)

Counterspelling can be great but most DMs don't use it...

I used counterspell for the first time a few weeks ago. I gotta say though it's a pretty narrowly useful tactic. You've to to prepare to CS, have the right spell to CS, succeed in your spellcraft check, etc. It's fun to do occasionally, but I'd rather cast lightening bolt.
