Improved Grab not as common as I thought

I just noticed that (apparently) a medium sized critter with Improved Grab isn't allowed to use it against medium sized characters!

Improved Grab (Ex): If a creature with this special attack hits with a melee weapon (usually a claw or bite attack), it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. No initial touch attack is required. Unless otherwise noted, improved grab works only against opponents at least one size category smaller than the creature. The creature has the option to conduct the grapple normally, or simply use the part of its body it used in the improved grab to hold the opponent. If it chooses to do the latter, it takes a –20 penalty on grapple checks, but is not considered grappled itself;

Those Gray Oozes and Gibbering Mouthers just lost a lot of thier bite. (of course, maybe this was already obvious to the other 99.9% of the gamers out there).

:eek: Holy Crap!

*considers the implications of this over the past 3 years of gaming*

HOLY CRAP!!

*fires off a frantic phone call to current GM*

Oh, now that you say that... I just realize, that THE reason not to play a small sized caster is gone now... Polymorph size restriction!

Gibbering mouthers are Medium?? That certainly wasn't my impression of them. You could just advance all gibbering mouthers that the PCs encounter to 5HD (Large), problem solved.

Improved Grab isn't nearly as bad as Snatch.

Wyverns have changed in 3.5, but I remember using one in 3E.

"Snatch: If a wyvern gets a hold on a creature four or more sizes smaller, it automatically deals damage with both claws and its sting attacks each round the hold is maintained. The wyvern can drop a creature it has snatched as a free action or use a standard action to fling it aside. A flung creature travels 30 feet and takes 3d6 points of damage. If the wyvern flings it while flying, the creature suffers this amount or falling damage, whichever is greater."

I remember thinking "That sounds cool!"

... until I realised that four sizes smaller than Huge is Tiny.

That's right - the wyvern has an awesome 3d6-damage special attack... that it can use on a housecat.

Ooh, sounds like the perfect way to get rid of those pesky familiars! :]
