I posted this in the News forum, but I'm not sure it went through.

In his latest blog entry Chris Thomasson drops a bit about the format of the upcoming Dragon & Dungeon online magazines.
[BQ]At the end of October, our first pdf issues will be out. We finally have a page layout, which is great. It's also interim/test material. We'll be looking for feedback on everything. We're already working on the 4th Edition versions, which I'm more excited about. What we'll be rolling out in a month is a sort of hybrid in look between 3rd and 4th Edition. Our art director, Stacy, did an awesome job putting it together on short notice. It will be even better when we can fully commit to a 4E look.[/BQ]

One thing has been revealed here that a lot of people were concerned about. The magazines will be available in PDF format.

Just how secret was 4th edition? I mean, the art director didn't know about the online version and had "short notice". I get one of those keystone cops feelings about how the online Dungeon and Dragon magazines are being handled from that post.

I doesn't actually say that. I get the impression that it was a recent decision to make the issues a combination of 3E & 4E, up to the 4E launch. They probably intended most of the content to be 3.5 in the initial plans.

FWIW, this actually makes me less interested. When you go to a digital format, you should take advantage of it rather than just using PDF & otherwise being the same as print. Put the bits that make sense as PDF in PDF, but use other formats (or even make the same content available in multiple formats) when it makes sense.

But then, no doubt that they can't please everyone. One at least hopes that they put some thought & research into the decisions rather than just taking the path of least resistance.
