Insomnia Terrain - Hobbit Rock

Sleepy eluded me, so I made a little hobbit outpost.

I figure the little hobbits could zing arrows at their foes in between bites of their lunch. I apologize for the cruddy picture quality. I will take another pic later today when the light is better.

I was somewhat successful at carving the Styrofoam to make it look like a big ol' weathered boulder. I sanded down some edges, then hand painted it Codex Grey, then a dry brush with Fortress Grey followed by Space Wolves Grey. There's some flocking on top of the boulder and a bit in the cracks. The tower is made of balsa, painted black, then dry brushed with Bestial Brown and Commando Khaki.

I like it! My only suggestion would be to "weather" the boulder's edges a bit more so it would blend better with surrounding terrain. The edge on the face looks a bit odd.

BTW, What is that frog-thing on the ground by the fort? And who makes the hobbit figs?

Thanks for the feedback. All minis are made by Citadel (warhammer). I'll keep practicing on the rocks ot get a more life-like feel.

Really nice piece! If you get a chance to shoot some of your figs, I would like to see those as well. They look really well done.

Interesting article. Alternatively, you could try paint the boulder brown - more sandstone like. The granuals of foam have a texture that is not un-rock-like.

Looking good. I agree there are some odd straight edges on the boulder, you can try filing with an emery board to get a more rounded look? Of course there is also the option of using real pumice pieces which are very light and fairly easy to cut with common tools (hacksaw, file etc). Then people go gaga about how 'realistic' your polystyrene rocks are

Yeah, that was a good article. I bought a foam cutter this week and man oh man, it cuts through foam real nice. It also melts the foam as it cuts so that you don't see the individual "cells" of the styrofoam.

I don't play WFB, but I find it more and more appealling. I am fascinated by the setting and all the characters. I think I'd like to play an undead army, though. I find zombies to be very amusing.
