Internet Communities

First Post
Well I took my first long look at the enword site last night. Talking to people in chat and reading the message boards I was really taken back. I have been getting very cynical about how the Internet is turning out. It seemed that large corporations and other commercial interests were taking over. I was not seeing much chance for "community sponsored" sites and services surviving. I see tremendous value in sites such as enworld. It is obvious now that a great many users of enworld also see value and are willing to contribute time and money to see it stay. It is this kind of spirit that promises to make the Internet one if not the greatest of the 7 wonders of the modern world. I wouldn't want to even be on the Internet were it not for such communities.

We are a very small ISP (literally a Mom and Pop operation) that can't afford put forth large amounts of time and money to support things that don't help pay the bills. We could have afforded to be more lax if we hadn't been going through such rough times ourselves (the whole Edison Telephone, Hosting Network thing). We would have had an impossible time surviving if it weren't for the help of friends. I would like to extend what ever help I can give to help the site stay on-line. You mentioned a server upgrade. I would like to offer to perform the needed work free of charge and pass on the only the cost of hardware. In the near future as Bandwidth costs come down I can pass on the savings to you.

Thanks to you and the enworld user for helping to restore my faith in the Internet.

Hey Walter! I didn't realize that was you in chat last night, sorry I missed you. I agree with you very much about the ENWorld community. The quality of the people here shows.

Walter! It's good to see you on the boards!

I can't speak for Russ, but I want to thank you personally for sticking with us the past few months - Russ is a really personal type where finances are concerned, and I never knew HOW much you stuck with us until recently.

Don't be too much of a stranger around here, though, whether gaming is your thing or not! :)

Sincerely,

Absolutely, and glad to have you join us. I'm glad we could help restore your faith in the net, and I'm sure Morrus and the site will be grateful for your offer.

It's amazing what 24 hours can do a soul, isn't it? Thank you for taking the time to look (something a larger corporation might not have done), offering to go the extra mile, and having the open mind needed to make the leap of faith that has kept it up and running through now. In short...

Welcome aboard! :)

Walter -

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and see what we're all about. Thank for your kind words, and thanks for being such a help to Russ (and to Adlon, too). I think what we've learned today is that some things are worth fighting to keep, and our community really pulled together to keep this special, shared space.
Hopefully, things can only get better from here. :)

Walter - Thank you for working with Russ on this. Though, I wish he had spoken up sooner, so he wouldn't have had to worry for so long by himself. It is nice of you to logon here as it is easier to put a 'face' on the entity that is Cyberstreet. As I am sure you have seen, asied from having (easily) enough money to bring current the account, we are also discussing things to avoid this situation in the future. It really is a community and I feel very good about being part of it. :)

As others have said, Hello and welcome! Feel free to browse the boards. Even if gaming isn't your thing, you still might enjoy the story hours. We also have a host of non-gaming specific forums that you might have fun with.

I know how easy it is to get cynical in this world.

OTOH, I have lived through a major earthquake, a major fire, two attempted shutdowns of local libraries, the blood drives of 9/12+, and many similar community efforts, large & small.

Give people and chance and you will find just how cool they can be. :)

So, a good on for the ENWorld community, for those helping in the fires in southern California, and all others who know that volunteering to aid where your heart leads you is an important part of being human and recognizing the world is much larger than your own skin!

WOO HOO! :D :D :D :D
