Sam was going stir crazy. Sure, he could walk the grounds, but eventually he would hit a big fence or encounter a guard. The guard would very politely direct him back toward the Hoffmann Institute, while the fence rather bluntly suggested that he had reached the limit of his wandering for the day. He wondered if anybody cared where he was. He hadn't talked to his parents in years, so he doubted they even realized he was gone. But he did have two businesses, plus JKD students who would be wondering where their teacher was. He had confidence that Mike could look after the classes, but eventually even Mike might begin to wonder if Sam was ever coming back. Sam wondered if the police had been notified. If so, what would they find? Big hairy men and grey guys with too many fingers? This was all too wierd for Sam. The thought he might distract himself with some reading. The Institute had a fairly extensive library, but his first trip there left him uneasy. It was the creepiest feeling library he had ever been in. Dark, with old dusty tomes scattered everywhere. It was as though they had said: "Make it disturbing. Make it unnerving. Make it so that nobody will enter unless they have a really good reason to be there." He went to the librarian: "Do you have anything by John Grishom?" The librarian looked at him blankly, pausing just long enough to convey total contempt for everything that Sam stood for. "Third aisle, halfway down."
