M'self, I always found the more intriguing concept for MetalStorm to be in the area of Area-Denial/Remote Fire Support. Such as seen on this page, and here.

A next-gen application of this tech could be airdroppable "Mortar-In-A-Box" systems. Forced Entry units like airborne could send fire support requests to such autonomous artillery systems (holding clusters of 40, 80, and maybe even 120mm tubes) which interogate each other, find which has the rounds, range, and opportunity to provide support, which then slew and fire. As for counter-battery, they're numerous, scattered, and unmanned. Not too shabby when coupled with GPS and Time On Target barrages.

A very gross application of MetalStorm appears in John Ringo's Posleen Invasion-series. Here the US tries to make an M1 Abrams-based anti-lander vehicle. The 'Rosser' replaced the 120mm cannon with a MetalStorm 105mm package using 12-tubes of 105mm each holding 100 rounds (which always seemed a bit excessive, but interesting still). When if turned out to be a failure in killing landers, an anti-infantry version using 40mm packs (w/40-tubes of 50 rounds each) was developed.
