Challenge ratings usually... in fact, always, work such that the higher the rating, the more powerful you should be when facing it. And it's quite possible to overwhelm a lesser CR creature if you happen to be strong enough.
On the other hand, fairy tales and such are filled with stories and such of the very mighty being felled by the weak... sometimes even after the supposedly mighty have tried and failed miserably.
In D&D, some artifacts are known for having something of this quality... such as those who can be destroyed by being trod on by the humble foot of an ant. Nothing big and powerful will work... the stronger you are, the less likely you are to win, in fact. Monsters having nothing like this though. So I was thinking of ways I could rectify this.
This will only be used on a single monster I have in mind...
Spell Resistance: Reverse X
This works like SR, except that the spellcaster must FAIL the check at DC:X in order for the magic to work. This check cannot be voluntarily failed.
Likewise, I was considering...
Damage Reduction: +1/-25
+1 weapons and greater do 25 less damage than normal. Normal weapons are not effected by this effect.
The result I have in mind with this monster is that the players sponser some younger adventurers to go and slay the monster that they are incapable of dealing with... after all, someone gave them a leg up at the beginning, it's time for them to give that big chance to someone else for a change. What do you think? Workable?
