Common mercenary work in space or on the ground, bounty hunting, or even turning privateer/pirate are all options, so long as the players can agree.

The setting is a few hundred years from now, on a planet owned by the Union of Allied Worlds called Ash. Ash is where the UW trains its military forces and its star system is also where a large amount of military equipment is produced and recycled. The UW doesn't maintain a large active military; if you sign on for basic training, only the top 1% who complete it are actually offered a military assignment. The rest are instead offered either membership in one of the existing mercenary companies, or the funds to start their own; as well as cheap equipment and repair/refueling, so long as they agree to work for the UW should war get started up.
About half of known space is dominated by the four major nations; the UW, the People's Star Republic, the Russian Conglomerate, and the Japanese Star Kingdom. The rest is owned by hundreds of small civilizations, some of which share a single star system, others a single civilization owns a dozen systems. These people often employ mercenaries; most commonly ones trained and equipped in the UW; to do their work for them, whether its putting down rebellions, fighting their neighbors, spying, capturing pirates and criminals; anything. The 'Independent worlds' are a vastly profitable place for a cunning mercenary.
Railguns and laser weapons are the primary hand weapons, and numerous other specialty weapons and gears exist. Genetic alteration and cybernetics are also fairly common.
