I need help.

The books cost so much and I want them!

But really I need help in creating a decent campaign.

I'm running IK in a single-player game with the girlfriend, who is playing a half-elven gunmage in Cygnar as a mercenary for hire. She's starting at 3rd level with no magelock pistol.

Any ideas for plotlines? I'm lost apart from "Kill the evil Wizard"

She is hired by an anonymous member of somebody's secret service. Up front she is told that she has been hired because she is both deniable and disposable.

Possibilities: The group that hires her is not who they say they are - after the mission they plant evidence leading the real agency to her.

The group is not who they say they are, and intend to keep using her, setting up a final 'mission' against themselves - where she will be caught and interrogated, casting blame on the agency they claimed they were.

The group is exactly who they say they are, but they are judging her for possible permanent status as one of their members.

The group is exactly who they say are, and one fine day they will decide to cut all ties and assassinate her.

She is hired to find out why the rail line between Corvis and Caspia is being fought in commitee - this can tie in with the events of the Witchfire Trilogy without playing through them.

Someone plants a bomb in her rooms, set to blow when the door is opened. On the back wall a Menofix is painted in red. *EDIT* Perhaps a chambermaid is killed by the bomb when she trieds to enter the room for cleaning.

A small fishing village on the shores of the Winterborn Lake has sent a messenger to several of the largest cities of Western Immoren, all of them charged with the same task: find a hero (or heroes) to save the village from a rampaging lake monster. The description of the monster makes it sound like a dragon fish (which is hardly a monster). Unfortunately, once a hero reaches the lake and begins investigating the "lake monster" he (or she, in this case) discovers that the creature is an amphibious tatzylwurm (use the template from Advanced Bestiary).

"We're gonna need a bigger boat."

who is playing a half-elven gunmage

Y'know, I was just looking through my IK books today and realized that while half-elves are written up in the Lock & Load Primer, they aren't mentioned at all in the IKCG. Given how isolated Iosans and Nyssor are it seems highly unlikely such a creature would come into existence. But the discrepancy between the two books is just weird.

Anyway, there's a war on so a mercenary should have no trouble finding paying jobs. Perhaps a Llaelese noble in exile needs her to make a border run to retrieve something of value to the resistance. Say, a tome on the construction of magelock pistols? The Llaelese produce many duellists and gunmages so it's natural that they'd want to get their hands on it before the Khador occupiers realize the tome's true value.

You could try and play a variant of the "Magnificient Seven"...or "The Seven Samurai" with her...make her be the hero of a small, forgotten hamlet somewhere close to a forest, with the local baron too busy with preparations for an upcoming war to care about trouble with a band of monsters or human rainders pstering the village every half year.

The gunmage is hired to kidnap the ambassador for the Protectorate of Menoth.
Possibilities: It is a simple kidnapping for ransom by a criminal group that does not want to risk its own members.

The person who hires the gunmage is the ambassador himself - he is converting to the Church of Morrow as a lay brother in a monastary.

The employer is the secretary to the abassador, who has reasons for wanting his superior removed.

Someone is murdering gunmages, one assassin was killed while killing one of the PCs associates - the dead assassin is carrying a list of names, the PC is number four on the list, meanwhile number three is killed across town.

The Gartens have stolen a shipment of firearms bound for the Cygnar army. One of the items stolen is a Magelock pistol, the PC may keep the Magelock pistol in lieu of payment if she can retrieve the rest of the shipment.

Someone has been attacking the paywagons for the army, if the gunmage can find out 'who' the army will take care of the rest...

The gunmage wakes on the deck of a ship, someone has slipped her a mickey and pressed her into naval service.

If you want to integrate some of the actual plotline into your campaign, keep this in mind: The current king, Leto, has only been king for a few years after getting rid of his evil brother, Raelthorne. Raelthorne has vowed to return and members of his secret police, still loyal to him are everywhere making trouble and plotting for his return. These would make great villains.

Mind you the mean of Raelthorne's defeat are left ambiguous, possibly downright diabolical (in a very literal sense)... Leto may, or may not, be the good guy, though Raelthorne certainly is a bad guy...

Hows about this -

Gunmage and friend DMPC (Wizard named Alaszus Winterborne) get a job protecting an emissary (A converted Morrowan Monk, ex-Menoth priest) on pilgrimage along the skirmishing Khador-Llael border. Cue a battle or two with bandits harrassing a village.

While there, they find a shipment of Rhulish made arms bound for Cygnar being raided by Khadorish warjacks. Despite everything, only the Cygnarian steamjack and about a dozen Khadorish raiders survive. When she comes on the scene, a recovering Rhulish paladin offers her a magelock pistol out of the bunch to help him get it back. (And gives the party a melee character.)

This'll give her about 2 missions or so I'd assume.

Any advice for a first-time IK DM? Things I could drop in?
