When I was playing D&D, I bought the physical books for the core rule books and any favorite adventures. I'm looking for something functional in prep and play. I'm not looking to be an archivist. I hate the PDF format, both for prep and play. In my WFRP 4e campaign, I bought everything in VTT and only had the core rulebook in print. I ended up buying the books for the last two of the five campaign books for my The Enemy Within campaign, because things get very complicated and I find it easier to grok during prep when I have a physical book. But I use the VTT content in play for the cross linking, searching, etc. That said, I also don't care much because I think the "threat to the hobby" complaints are overblown. There are so many options that what WOTC does just hasn't affected me. I'm all for TTRPG as a service and have come to realize that I don't need or really get much out of a full bookshelves of past adventures and hundreds of PDFs saved in my Google Drive. At my age and with my life style, I'm unlikely to replay adventures and treat them as consumables. I understand why others feel different and they can vote with their wallets. But enough DMs and players feel otherwise that WotC has little incentive to provide PDFs for current edition books.
