But I think D&D editions in general have gotten more and more like that, the immersion of having to describe how you are going to interact with the environment the DM has described is largely removed by making a skill check. Having to think of how I'm going to role play an encounter based on clues the DM has given me in descriptions of an NPC are largely removed by making a skill check. I never get into the mind of the PC, I'm in the mechanics most of the time. All of this is IME and all that.
