Is EQRPG and d20 more or less equal?

First Post
For people that have looked through the EQRPG PHB at glance and maybe some further delving do the two systems match up level for level class for class, more or less?

Would a 10th level rogue still be more or less the same 10th level rogue using either system? What about the pure casters? I feel the hybrid casters are a bit more powerful than than say the Ranger and Paladin of 3e.

Thoughts welcome

At a glance I would say that the EQ classes get more powerful as they advance in levels. That being said, I think EQ is a power gamers paradise, and it has a few options further in the rules that stand out and show off the potential of the d20 system as a whole. The pure magic casting classes are more powerful than the pure magic classes in DnD for sure, especially the Necromancer and Enchanter.

The answer to your question is no. We played the game for about three weeks so I am have a little knowledge. So, here is why I say no.

An EQ character is about double as powerful as a DnD character. If you are wondering about the video game, the computer characters lvl is equal to half of EQ pnp character.

As for monsters, this is a much different situation. In our EQ game, I had to double the monster's CR. If the party was 3rd lvl, the monster CR should be 6. While at first I was concerned about hp differences (because EQ has about the same hp increments as DnD), the healers are so strong in healing magic that they kept up the hit points.

As for magic, EQ is much more combative in the spells like the computer game. This is actually kind of cool. A 1st level wizard can stand toe to toe with a warrior in terms of combat. This is a balance issue that I wish someone would fix in DnD. Also, casterr types all have buff spells that increase the stats of the characters. Apparently, EQ will have alot of temp. ability draining powers. The healers heal for a lot and the bards are just buffers with some healng, but bards can cast multiple spells at the same time.

That is all I can think of now. I kind of became frustrated with the DnD monster/EQ character incompatablity. We had fun though and powergaming casters at low level was nice for a change.

I have to disagree, but dont take it personally. The reason I say this is that i play a Wizard in EQrpg and at level 1 and 2 he was just like the wizard are in EQO and DnD, WEAK. Ok I know you can cast frost bolt and shock of frost but compared to the damage a Warrior can do your spells are weak, and you have to roll to hit with frost bolt (as well as the Mobs get a save for half too). I will say that since level 3 though the warrior and wizard have been competing and the warrior has had the edge but with quicken mastery I can put out 2 spells a round (if mana holds out lol). I am at level 6 and the competion continues and I see that I will be gaining the edge at next spell level (4th).

I have to agree that EQ characters are more powerful than normal 3E but it all evens out with prestige classes in 3E and other ways you cannot do in Eqrpg. I have seen some pretty powerful 3E characters and epic levels in 3E are very nice too.

Cancel magic..all the Npc bad guys will have this spell. LOl At higher levels you have more pwerful versions of this too.

Dude, the bard rocks. We have a bard in the group with my wizard and our warrior and the bard can twist songs almost too easily. The bard has saved our butt more than once with the healing song and the mezz song. I remember at 3rd level we fought a Necromancer and he DotEd me with poison bolt i think that was the spell) which did 3 damage but did a 1hp/per round posion damage for 20 rounds! I was dead in 8 rounds but the bard saved my ass with his heal song(thank goodness he had a lot of mana left lol)

The RPGnet folks prefer EQ RPG to D&D. I'm only making 1st-level pregens for an upcoming con game (Pacificon!), but here's what I noticed:

* Evil races and classes. You can create a Shadow Knight band with Dark Elf spellcasters (including a Necromancer) and Troll and Ogre muscle. Neat. Strangely enough, it's easier than I though to convert these boring "good parties only" adventures to Lawful Evil. Er, Organized Evil.

* High ability stats. In EQ RPG, some races get as high as +4 or +6 to a stat, while in D&D, it's only +2.

* Bard songs. Bards have their own spells and spell mechanics.

* Weapon speed classes. At higher levels, characters have additional attacks for faster weapons.

If I didn't want powergaming, I'd play Call of Cthulhu!
