Fortunately, the guy in my particular group is good about taking "no" for an answer. (If he wasn't, I doubt he would have lasted.)In the specific case of the guy who wants a +1 for reading a book, I'd say, "Well, studying the book gives you the knowledge you need to spend points on that skill when you level up!
