As far as Tolkien-Elves go, the go to Valinor one way or the other. When they die, they go to the Halls of Mandos (as can be researched either at the site given above or in the Silmarillion). There seems to be a possibility, that they even could come back to Middle-Earth: Glorfindel (replaced in the movie by Arwen. His horse brings Frodo to Rivendell) is said to be the same Glorfindel as the one fleeing from Gondolin, who wrestled a Balrog and dropped with the Monster to death. (OK, this is hotly depated) For being sad about the death of Elves: As mentioned, they would have gone to Valinor either way. What the heck. It's a shortcut. And Haldir was snotty and annoying. And after the Elves where dead, Helms Deep was the way as it was intended to be: Only one Elf at Helms Deep!The interpretation, that this was put in to show, that the Elves are a waning race, may be right, but nevertheless, the elves are unneccessary, because all those who would get it know it already (because they have read the books) and all others do not get it at all. And just to get it from my breast for today: If I got 200 Elves with bows before a hole in the wall, and 10.000 Orks come through, the last thing I shout is charge!!!!
