I have seen some interesting tracks here. Balance means all choices should be equally good? I…am not able to join you there. With point buy, you CAN clone one another if you want. You can also choose something different for RP or other reasons. And who sets the standard? I have bucked traditional wisdom in several areas over the last 12 years and have effective characters. The impulse to always protect players from themselves seems bizarre to me. It makes more sense to allow people to figure things out and retcon if really needed (e.g. “I am sorry you thought that fear would be used more…let’s talk about swapping it after the next long rest” or whatever). The game was predicated on rolling scores and playing the cards you are dealt. Of course it has changed over time…but complete homogeneity is not desirable. Let people play strength rogues and whatever. I argue that several moderately high scores are better than one if one generally…but there is debate. Same with attack stat needing to be maxed from the start. I could play a caster with and 18 asap…but have also had fun with 16 in order to take a fun feat or pump con. Variety is fun. Not all choices are equivalent for all purposes. Many ways to skin a cat… But I don’t think all arrays are equal for all purposes As per the OP question. When I make a new blade pact warlock (usually NOT hexblade) I do some weird placements that need more scores with bonuses. My array from point buy shows that. Other considerations for me: I don’t like to dump stats to 8, generally. I have rp reasons to not be dumb or whatever (fat cleric of mine is slow so I dumped dex to pump other scores). In this then, effectiveness is not the only array consideration. As such, the op much homogeneity is not my preference. Lastly, the differences don’t impact survival that much. I have not missed too many critical saves by over had a total round ruined for lack of an extra plus one in attack stat. So…different arrays are not generally game breaking in my mind. But they are not equivalent either…
