Bards are good, no great. I was at coppercon in AZ a few years back, and there was a tournament going on where there was tons of premade characters of 10th level to choose from. The people were assigned to certain tables, and everyone rolled off for first pick. I was second to last on the choices. It was 6 or 8 players to a table (I forget exactly it's been so long) but there was 10 characters to choose from. I chose the only bard. He was a Bard9/Shadow Dancer1. Made it all the way to the final challenge with barely any damage, plus I was holding back my spells because I didn't want to blow through them until we got to the last encounter.We encountered a specifially designed theatre-type room and in there, the survivors of all tables came together and fought an Old Silver Dragon that had the Fiendish template on it, plus some goodies. As the battle wore on The sorcerors who could fly were spent on spells, and the fighter couldn't really reach the thing since it was flying and doing strafing runs on the scattered pc's. I had just used dispel magic on a held rogue to free him and handed him my bow that had holy on it since he was a better shot than I. This gets the dragons attention. As he flys over and is about prepare some nastiness I let loose with only spell I've got left. At this point the party is expecting a TPK. Everyone is still alive, but low on hitpoints, and almost all spells exhausted. It was a very grim atmosphere around the table. I tell the DM, "Ok, I'm casting a pitiful 1st level spell at him, the only thing I got left." He doesn't seem to care what the spell is, there's nothing left that can really harm the dragon. [Ok, roll your Spell Penetration] Natural 20. The group goes crazy! Yes! The DM calms everyone down, [Ok you got the SR defeated, does it have a save?] "Yeah, Will DC15." Everyone goes somber again hearing that and the DM quips, [Ah, his best save. He'll only fail on a 1] The Dm rolls.... a 1!!!!! Everyone goes nuts again, and THEN he asks, [Ok, what spell is it?] "Tasha's Hideous Laughter." The DM's face goes pale. he quickly grabs a PHB read the details of the spell, and his shoulders sag. [The dragon, FALLS over on his back, and is laughing uncontrollably] Everyone flanks on the dragon and hack it to death before the spell wears off. We went from a TPK to a TPS with one 1st level spell. Bards ROCK.</blockquote>
