Others have already answered the music question, I'll give some suggestions on prestige classes.
DMG:
Assassin works, and I wouldn't call any class with an instant death ability weak.
Shadowdancers are great for moving around the battlefield, and being sneaky. Your bardic charms will turn you into a master spy and infiltrator with this class.
Magic of Faerun:
Harper Mage: A 5 level prestige class that will continue to increase your bardic lore, and will give you a boost to saves and a number of free and good feats.
Oriental Adventures
Blade Dancer: If your DM will let you take this class, which works great for Elven or Arabic bards. It will *really* increase your mobility and your damage potential.
Book of Eldritch Magic Two
Check out the alternate bard in this book. It is a little more song oriented, and has a few more direct damage abilites than the standard bard. All of the prestige classes presented in the book work well for the bards too.
If you are focusing on musical abilities Virtuoso is your best printed choice.
