is there such thing as a good FR novel?

To all the people who say that ALL FR novels suck:

Have you read ALL of the FR books or are you just basing your opinion on the couple (maybe more) books that you read? Because I really can't see how you can make such a grave assumption from a couple of books from a variety of very diverse books that only have the setting in common. I seems to me that some people that are saying that doing it just for the sake of bashing FR. But I may be completely off here.

Anyway,

I have only read two FR books so I can't tell you about all the other ones out there.
I have read Prince of Lies and Crucible: Trial of Cyric the Mad and wholly enjoyed both of them. So IN MY OPINION those were good books. YMMV, however.

I'll be quiet now, unless I am called upon to save the world again.

The FR novels can indeed be enjoyable if you are really into the setting. I think the only novels that have done well outside of the gamer market are the Drizzt books and I think that has alot to do with the "kewlness" of Drizzt. I have enjoyed several FR novels, Cormyr: a Novel being my favorite. However, I am also an English Teacher about 20 course hours and a dissertation away from my PhD and from that standpoint, they are poorly written for the most part. Some are written better than others. Spellfire by Ed Greenwood had sentences in it that made me wince. Really though, these books are not meant to be well written and frankly, please don't yell at me, any writer worth his salt would not be writing straight to mass market paperback fantasy novels for WOTC. The better fantasy writers tend to do quite well on their own and are almost always published in Hardback.

I think the Forgoten Realms books with Drizzt in them ABSOLUTELY ROCK!!! My own character (not the gnome) was going to be based on him until I realized how incredibly cheesy that would make me look.

I mean, the books are kindof long and get boring in certain sections, but Id read them again if I had to. Easily. I guess if the other Forgotten Realms books are anything like the Dangerous Dark Elf, I'd read them too. Because that Salvatore guy knows how to write. You think he gives any pointers to the other writers?
