Is this bad roleplaying?

I know bad roleplaying isn't exactly the right term, but...

I would like to use the same character concept twice in a row. The characters' pasts and personalitys would be different, but they would both be water mages. My previous water mage died at second level, so I was unable to do much with him. I think that the water mage idea has some good roleplaying potential, and would like to use it.

So is it wrong?

Unless your DM has a limit on the number of water mages in his world, I don't think it is ever wrong to play a character concept you enjoy and are excited about, especially since your last attempt at it didn't get much of an opportunity to play itself out.

You specific situation looks okay, the character concept still has a lot of room in it and the last one bit the dust before you could explore it, so you'd like another shot.

There is a problem if four campaigns from now you're still playing a water mage.

If I were your DM, I'd definitely ask that you change a lot about the character.

Not stats or chosen spells or feats, but a different alignment and personality to go with your different background. Maybe even a different race if it doesn't kill your concept.

Bah, that's nothing, got a guy in out group who plays nothing but tanks, and more then half the time they're elven paladins

Sounds to me like you've got what Robin Laws calls a "Specialist." The example he uses in his book is the player who always wants to play a ninja character, but it's the same idea. Bottom line is, as long as elven paladins fit your world/campaign concept and he's having fun, I wouldn't sweat it too much. :)

My wife nearly always plays archers. Especially elven fighter/ranger types. She knows the rules for them and the feats and she likes the concept. Fortunately, for my Storytelling DM brain- she changes the background and personality a bit from character to character to make them unique.

I don't see a problem. You have a concept you really want to explore, and you didn't get a chance with the last one, since he died too soon.

Were you my player, I'd say go ahead, as long as you changed the name and background

Heh, I got in the mood to play amazons (kick ass archer women with an early masactomy) and at one point had three different ones in three different campaigns. They were slightly different in personality, but I think the main reason for the multiplicity was that the campaigns all had different DMs and differnt power levels and I was trying to find a way to really explore the character. I would probably play another amazon if given the chance in the hopes of really doing some roleplaying with her, so I totally understand you wanting to 'do over' a character you weren't able to take very far.
