hmmm, I like the letter. Rather than have these events occur with the layer watching as the consequences of her actions unfold why not introduce: 1. vengar gives a hint in his letter about the assassain's identity (my prince of assassains) , this will allow alaine to research and find out who from Vengar's country is feared as an assassain, there have to be rumours etc. in the underground. maybe a side trek can be used to roleplay her spies trying to gather information. 2. Outraged by Vengar's escape, the king and prince start to mobilise troops (I assume they dont know it was alaine that let him go) with the intention of pre-empting any revenge plans on Vengars part. This could be just posturing, but how will anyone else know that :) 3. The Prince sends spies and assassains out to locate and kill the traitor that let Vengar go (very shakespearean to unwittingly order the death of your relatives). 4. Alaine finds out all of the above (maybe Vengar tips her off about the princes assassains). It is up to her to decide. Come clean about releasing Vengar, and warn her family of the oncoming assassain but allow the "war" to kick off. Or, keep quiet, gain control, somehow survive the hit squad, call off the war and give Vngar something to use as leverage against her (I am sure he can swing it that it looks like she asked him to kill the others). Or, she can follow through with the war heading an army in a frenzy for revenge over the death of their king and prince. Surely destroying Vengar now will stop the bloodshed in the future as skirmishes continue on for years. just a thought.
