ISBN Info for New Publishers

After worrying and being confused about the acquisition of an ISBN, and completely misunderstanding the service that Lulu.com provides, I have finally gotten off my posterior and found out what,why, how and how much it costs to obtain an ISBN for my company's books.

If you are being published by a Canadian publisher, ISBNs are free.

Alas, in the US you can get 10 ISBN's for 300 hundred bucks and change.

In the UK is £99 (approx $200) for 10

In New Zealand, you get ISBNs from the National Library.

Note that publishers are also required to lodge two copies of every book (even electronic ones!) with the National Library. I don't know if that's still true in the US (used to be, bakc in the day of copyright registrations).

Wow, that must have changed. We got something like 100 ISBN numbers for $150. But that was 5 or 6 years ago. Maybe it depends on who you go through.

In the US there is only one real source to get the ISBN numbers. Cathix's stated the rate it has been for at least the last 4 years, it hasn't changed noticiably since I first purchased a batch.
