Shen lets the others part from her, walking down the street as though she has somewhere to go as they split off in their own directions. She sticks to the larger streets, keeping close to anyone else she finds, to avoid being singled out in this unfamiliar place. She watches the city change, from sandy and flat to blue and angular, black shadows stabbing across the surfaces of the buildings and streets; from shouting and creaking and rumbling to tapping echoes and distant murmuring; from pungent sweat to bitter sand and air; and from warm air crushing in on her to cool air sucking the breath from her lungs. Without the fury of daytime, the city seems to be sinking, each corner tugging at her and echoing silently with hunger pangs. This is why she hates cities. Or maybe it's just been too long since she met anything that didn't have this city's tendrils buried in it. The taverns empty and the streets get more and more bare. Soon the only people she sees draw their scarves and cloaks around them to hurry past her. Peeking down each black alley, Shen finds one with some boxes and windowsills sitting in the moonlight. She turns off the road and approaches them, quietly gliding from one foothold to another up the building, until she can look straight up at the stars without dark shapes looming at the edge of her vision. If she looks around, she can make out some lights and buildings, some tall and some short, their silhouettes against the sand like the snarled teeth of an open maw yawning around her; beyond, endless nothing. Somehow, empty desert seems more comforting, but she didn't come here to be pampered, anyway. [sblock="On a stupider note"]She pulls out her trident and examines it closely. What was that thing Alejandro said? "Anemone?" What did that have to do with a trident? It had totally slipped her mind to ask about it. It did kind of sound like her name, though, so it must be elven. Maybe Anemone was some kind of hero who used a trident. And if she was, Shen's parents must have known that when they named her, they would have known all those elven stories and stuff. She turns the trident over a couple times before putting it back with her other stuff, a little more carefully than normal, and lying down. Maybe it isn't real, but she chooses to believe that she was named for this hero Anemone. Must be a sign for what's to come. She slowly detaches from the world, permitting herself to dream about a griffin, and riding him with trident in hand.[/sblock]
