Item: boots of flight

hong

WotC's bitch
(Yeah, I know about winged boots, but I'm after something different.)

As a free action, these boots allow the wearer to fly, as the spell, for up to 10 rounds each day. The duration of the fly effect need not be consecutive rounds.

Basically it's like boots of speed, but with fly substituted for haste. Boots of speed cost 12,000 gp. Would that be a fair price for this, or should it cost more?

That's a tricky one. Compared vs. winged boots:

Free action to activate vs. standard action (advantage- boots of flying)
10 rounds/day vs. 5 minutes 3/day (advantage- winged boots)

I say 12,000 gp sounds fine.

OTOH, someone on rgfd pointed out that haste is a round/level spell, while fly is minute/level. So, on that basis, it should be 12000 gp for a total of 10 minutes per day, usable whenever.

But that seems on the high side. Maybe 12000 gp for 5 minutes per day, usable whenever? The free activation is a big advantage.

Compared to boots of speed, it should certainly be cheaper.

Both 3rd level spells (and both benchmark spells).

Both normally require a standard action and only a free action here (which certainly is only because of the single round duration of one activation).

Then again, haste normally has multiple targets, fly has not.

If you would see dropping the multiple targets as a balancing factor to reducing the duration from 1 minute/lvl to 1 minute (10 rounds), then the same price would be fair, I guess.

If you go somewhat by the pricing table...

3 x 5 x 2,000 gp (use activated) = 30,000 gp
Duration one-fifth of normal -> 6,000 gp

Boots of speed in comparison...

3 x 10 x 2,000 gp = 60,000 gp
Targets one-tenth of normal -> 6,000 gp

So, boots of speed have the price doubled for some reason, that same reason probably works for your item as well, whatever it is. ;)

The thing is that the boots of speed don't really follow the normal pricing rules, AFAICT.

Boots of speed: 3 x 10 x 2000 (use-activated) x 4 (rounds/level spell) x 1/5 (limited uses) = 48000 gp

The fact that haste is a multiple-target spell doesn't factor into the equation.

The basic question is: would you choose an item that lets you fly for 10 rounds (one minute total), albeit without activation limits, for 12000 gp, when you can have winged boots for 16000 gp?

That rounds per level multiplier only applies to continuous items, I think.

Without that, and limiting the reduced use factor to 1/5 instead of 1/10 which I used above, you would have the 12,000 gp.

If you think the item is not as good as boots of speed or wings of flying, then just drop the cost down to 6-8,000 gp. That would probably be fair.

I find it hard to envision a one-round Flight effect being priced the same as a multi-round Flight effect.

Possibly unintended uses for your Boots:

- Feather fall

- Boost to speed
-- to Charge
-- to Run Away
-- to Acheive Better Tactical Position

It's the boost to speed that troubles me. I wonder if you might be interested in 10-round, free-action Air Walk boots. They wouldn't change the character's movement speed, but would allow every other effect.

Hmm, for extra bonus Wuxi-awesome, consider this item:

Slippers of Mobility
These soft shoes have 40 charges per day, which regenerate at dawn. The wearer may expend these charges for a variety of effects as an Immediate action (free, on your turn or not) each round. Each effect lasts for one round.
- 1 charge: Spider Climb
- 2 charges: Water Walking
- 3 charges: Cloud Walking
- 4 charges: Air Walk

Dunno about pricing.
