Our friend that we weren't sure if we were going to play with anymore or not is infact going to still play with us. There was a big misunderstanding. BUt we're playign this weekend!!!! I'm both excited and nervous as hell at the same time!!

I guess all I can do is prepare, and improvise, and everything else you guys told me.

Now I gotta go prepare! I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Sounds exciting! My piece of advice for new DMs: don't be worried about acting like an idiot. Unless you're completely out of control, the more you ham it up, the more the players will have fun. Above all, avoid the temptation to talk in a monotone: when you're nervous and freaking out inwardly about everything you're trying to remember, it's easy to try to appear calm by speaking slowly and without inflection. But it's boring. Use your voice!

Have fun, don't be afraid of making mistakes and if you aren't sure of a rule when the game is going good, don't break up the rhythm of the game to check it out. Use your judgement and keep playing with the understanding that you will check out the actual rule for future use when there is a break.

Good point. A big mistake for a lot of new DMs is stopping the game dead over and over again to check a rule. I suspect you're much better off winging it unless a character's life hangs in the balance.

Have fun! And let us know how it went.

And remember...just...say....no. The only reason your players will ask you, "Do you want another beer?" is because they are trying to get you tipsy. Then they will start asking for cool magic items and bonus XP hoping you'll be too trashed to know that you shouldn't give it to them.

Player's are the sneakiest encounters!

On the other hand, it's a cool DM philosophy to "just say yes." Not to beer - tipsy DMs are a baaaad thing - but to players.

Player: "Can I swing from that chandelier and crash into the bad guy, tripping him?

Sad DM: "No."

Happy DM: "You can try! I don't know the rules for that, but it's cool, so if you make a jump check I'll give you +2 to hit as if you were charging. Then roll your trip attack like it is in the book."

This makes me happy on so many levels. There's something awesome about first games, first campaigns, first characters.

You'll do fine. Even if you make mistakes, the point is to have fun. You've got a lot of good people here in case you have any questions.

Good luck!

Good lcuk!! Tell us how things go :) You'll do perfectly fine, all you need is a big smile and the ability to convince they they're having fun. ;)
