I once had a 2ndEd game in which the player of the thief (Hah! Yes! A thief! Not a namby "Rogue!" :p ) wanted to know if he could carry around some soap. Okay, I said. Usually I take my PCs' cleanliness for granted, but if he wanted to buy soap, well, it was on the equipment list. All was fine until the party needed to get through a locked door. The thief turned to me and said, "I take out my soap, stick it into the lock to make a mold of the key, pull it back out, and then make a copy of the key out of wood with my trusty dagger." "No," I said. "You've got lockpicks; roll against your Open Locks skill." This went on for a while. I firmly believe that any kind of soap will not hold up to that kind of treatment. You could cram it into a lock, sure, but when you pulled it out of the lock it would all crumble and most of it would remain inside. I think I had as much frustration as I had with him because he was constantly looking for ways around the rules; I think he felt that if he used the rules and rolled the dice, he would fail. In hindsight, I should have let him do it that way, but given him a bonus to Open Locks and still made him roll. TWK
