The Dungeon adventure "Test of the Smoking Eye" seems to imply that if the players get hungry on their journey through the Abyss that they can just eat some fiendish buffalo and everything is rosey.

Wouldn't there be some repurcussions?

. . . I just ate some and have a tummy ache. Is there worse to come?

Why would there be repercussions, you narrow-minded bigot? Fiendish buffaloes are BUFFALOES TOO!!! Jeez, some people...

I hear fiendish buffalo is pretty gamy; some folks don't like the strong flavour. Try the fiendish antelope next time, if you can catch one; lean and tasty.

No, other than maybe a lingering discomfort with no mechanical penalties, I don't think it should have any effects. Wait...maybe it's addictive :] :] :]

Fiendish Buffalo

Fiendish buffalo is delightful: it usually comes with a delightful pre-smoked flavour. Some varieties may be spicy...as in "Deviled".

Mechanically per the SRD there are no other effects, nor would I recommend any in this adventure: the PC's are probably pretty low on supplies anyway.

That said, I ran a two-part adventure once in a lower magic world that made different assumptions. The PC's were hired to hunt a giant vicious boar that had been attacking caravans. It turned out to be an advanced fiendish boar (which was a story in itself). After they killed it, they butchered it and sold the meat to the people of the village. It was a big boar. It was a lot of ham and pork.
Two weeks later, they discovered that if someone ate enough fiendish pork, they turned into a wereboar.
Something like three-quarters of the villagers transformed into wereboars, made the alignment shift, ceased farming, and took to banditry. Now that entire part of the country is being raided by wereboar bandits, requiring the king to send a small army to restore order.
The PC's have two iron-clad rules now.
1. "Don't eat pork."
2. "Never trust a butcher."
If I ever run them through my Sweeney Todd adventure, I think I can create a party of vegan adventurers.

I really go for the fiendish buffalo wings myself, dipping in the sause of the balrog, washed down with beer of river Styx, mmmmmm good eatting. ;)

I think I would use the tainted rules from UA. Cleric purify would negate.

Why not have there be an effect? I'd probably make it mild for something as relatively mundane as a fiendish buffalo -- make a Fort save, DC 15 or so (what level is the adventure?) or be nauseated for 1d4 hours, or something like that.

Great story about the wereboars, though. That's pretty classic; I like to see the PCs actions having unanticipated consequences like that, that really make a difference in the campaign. Pretty cool.
