Jürgen's Fantasy Art

Jürgen's Fantasy Art

I thought I should start a thread of my own now that I am actually starting to create fantasy art. Comments and suggestions are strongly encouraged.

This picture shows Ombuso, a city atop an enormous plant from another world.

I have mixed feelings about this painting. I like the effects of the roots, but I'm not satisfied with the top of the plant, and I am also not happy that the plant doesn't really meld into the jungle below at its bottom. I will probably redo this image at some far-off point in the future when I am better at painting fantastic landscapes. But for now, I want to move forward to other exercises...

Now here is a work I am far happier with:

DareshMedium.jpg

It shows the attack of a Daresh, a creature I invented as a substitute for mind flayers (since they aren't in the SRD). You can read more about that creature's habits and life cycle here.

Admittedly, this isn't fantasy art, but what the hell...

This is the Airbus A380 - for those who haven't been paying attention to the aviation industry, it is currently the largest passenger aircraft in existence. I made this for a friend, who works for a related industry.

I'd suggest using either photo reference or draw from actual models. Spend a lot more time on the initial drawing and then try and color it. When doing color, again look at things in life. Use photo reference. It looks like your using the Dodge/Burn tool. Avoid that like the plague! Use actual colors and paint in highlights and shadows.

And now, something completely different.

I have been trying to design a cover for future PDF versions of Urbis. Here is the first draft.

This was inspired by a magazine of the Jugendstil period of art. Ultimately, I plan to add a golden-toned drawing of a city into the middle, and a human adventurer to the middle and right (using the same color scheme as the upper and lower parts).
