Would you recommend this book? My elder brother is reading that one at the moment and looks extremely disgusted with it, but the plot outline looks somewhat promising.

I thought the whole series was a fun read, and smarter than your average fantasy. He managed to keep the magical aspects of it internally consistent. If you like alternate history and magical technologies, you will probably get a kick out of it.
 

I haven't read any of the sequels, but I really enjoyed Newton's Cannon. Now that I'm reminded of it I'll have to track down the others.
