It's Power Strike, I think (an encounter power that triggers on a hit). And I was iffy on it, because it's added on after a hit takes place, just the same as his daily hammer power is (a thundering weapon). However, critical hits explicitly call out weapon rolls as needing to be rolled, not encounter powers, so I treated them differently, even though they had the same trigger, effectively. Yeah, it just seemed to make a big difference. But, the Bard was another Leader, so maybe that was it. Speed did pick up as I learned his abilities a bit, of course, but I was surprised just how much time it added. I do make individual successes matter in skill challenges, often times. Like, twice they've used Arcana to identify magic in place, and this helped them piece together that our first session's enemies are related to the enemies from this session (both used cold, necrotic, and necromancy magic). In addition to that clue, they looked for areas that had magic lingering like this, and used it as markers for where their enemies might be. So, it had both a short term and long term effect on game play, and that's outside of the "another 1 success" to the skill challenge. But, changing the formula a bit, like you point out, might not be a bad idea. It's a bit more linear, but perhaps laying the stakes out from the outset will help. Like in your example: zombies are trying to get in. Do stuff to make less zombies get in. It's a bit of a different feel from the X successes before 3 failures formula, but pretty close. I think it'd be best if I knew what he disliked. There may be nothing I can do, but it'd still be good to know. He just couldn't pin it down when I asked him last night, but maybe I can talk to him more about it before our next session. Anyways, thanks for the advice. I'm considering new options for skill challenges. I plan to run some the same way as I did with the "escape the caverns" challenge tonight, because I find them tense, which I like in a skill challenge. But maybe I can get more away from the "exploration" skill challenge, and try something closer to what you proposed, or something else. I'm not sure yet, but I'm thinking on it, and open to thoughts from anyone.
