This is a highly truncated version of stuff we used in our Egyptian D&D: When an Egyptian warrior kills an enemy, he is awarded a hornet, representing a sting upon the enemy nation. The hornet is a small brass pin, shaped like a Vespa orientalis, and is worn on the left breast. When the soldier has 5 confirmed kills, his 4 previous brass hornets are exchanged for one silver one as an upgrade. Therefore a soldier who has killed 22 Libyans, for example, has 4 Silver and 2 Brass Hornets on his uniform. When he has 25 kills, all his hornets thus far convert into a Hive, which is a Silver pin shaped like a stylized pyramidal nest. Thus a soldier with 31 kills wears 1 silver hive, 1 silver hornet, and 1 brass hornet. At 100 kills, he gains a Golden hive. at 300 kills, a Platinum hive. At his commanders discretion, if a soldier kills a large war-beast, or destroys a catapult, or takes down an enemy wizard or other high-value or high-hit dice target, he can be awarded silver or golden hornets directly. Golden hornets represent extreme valor or daring, and are not normally exchanged for hives later on, but they nominally represent "12 stings". Now the hornets and hives are not magic items in and of them selves, but what is often done is that a Mass Bless spell, or the aura of a Battle Standard will radiate out to all soldiers in range. Often the soldier will benefits from a +1 morale bonus to hit and damage and half on AC, up to the square root of the "value of his hives+hornets worn", to a maximum of +5 to hit and +5 to Armor Class. (Example: 3 soldiers receives a Mass Battle Bless.) - Sal the Rookie gets the spell as described, which lasts for as long as the description reads. - Ahmad wears one Brass Hornet. He gets the above, but retains +1 to hit for the rest of the battle. - Nebo the Valorous is wearing a Golden Hive, he is +5 hit, +5 AC for the rest of the battle. feel free to use it or not, I just posted it cause your idea brought back good memories.
