How's about an Architect's Rod: Apparently made of solid gold and richly decorated with exquisite cast detail, this item was given to the most trusted of the architects on the great building projects the Pharoahs demanded. An instrument of office and the trust that Pharoah showed in the bearer, they were also useful items in their own right. Capable of a number of simple tasks to aid an engineer, it also bears some enchantments for self defence in case the bearer ran into bandits, wild animals or the occasional slave revolt. The item is marked with regular notches along its length, ¾ of an inch apart. Every sixteen markings (1') there is a larger notch. The rod is two feet long. Along the side are (hieroglyphs, pictograms, whatever your Egypt-derived culture uses) praising a long-dead Pharoah and declaring the original owner's skill and prowess. With one command word, the rod will hover in place (defying anything but a very strong wind but easily movable by the user). If roughly upright, the rod will always correct itself to be pointing straight up. If roughly horizontal, the rod will correct itself to be perfectly horizontal. When moving it, the rod applies a gentle pressure (similar to a fairly strong magnet) to stay at the same height, regardless of the incline or roughness of the ground. Physically removing the rod frees it completely. With a second command word, the rod will extend steadily (up to 3' per round) until either it hits an obstruction, reaches a total length of 10' or the command word is repeated. When it does so, more notched markings appear on the extended portions of the rod, allowing it to be used as a measure. A third command word causes it to shrink at the same rate, to a minimum length of one foot. A fourth command word causes a small trickle of water to flow from the base. While not much - roughly ten minutes to fill a cup - it is enough to quickly judge how flat a dry stone surface is. When 2-3' long, the rod may be used as a +1 club. When 4-5' long, the rod may be used as a +1 greatclub. It is enchanted to withstand use in combat.
