I just finished watching the hilariously terrible Johnny Mnemonic, and between guffaws I thought that a lot of elements in the movie would make a wonderful transition to my D&D game. (Shadowrun too, I imagine, if I played it.)
Enchanting couriers to carry messages without being able to read or know the content of the message would be valuable in a world where fast transfers of information are restricted to 25 words. A time-sensitive exploding head would serve to encourage action by the PCs and heighten tension in a dungeon or NPC confrontation without necessarily increasing the danger from the challenges in their path. The expendablity of couriers would make it reasonable for powerful wizards to hire 1st-level characters to do their work. The value of the data in the PC's head would make it reasonable for opponents to use less than lethal force in an effort to retrieve said information. This provides a fantastically awesome venue for Modify Memory, one of the best spells ever. The Black Shakes, while absent from the short story, seems like a good disease to afflict a kingdom with to provide a plot. Maybe make it Cure Disease resistant, so it pops back up after a month or so of dormancy. The Street Preacher is so going to be an enemy cleric. "Halt, sinners!"
Also, I WANT ROOM SERVICE! (NSFW) Pure Awesome. What all have folks mined from this movie for their games?
