I’ll check it out, thanks! I’m curious about Dolmenwood, and I think that with chargen houserules I could enjoy Shadowdark. Yeah sensible math and some customization at CharGen are important to me, so I’m glad to see that OSE has advanced rules that hit those marks. Dragonsbane I’m unfamiliar with. What makes it stand out, to you? Even with later clarification this confuses me. How can it be not “really OSR-ish” when the aesthetics, themes, storytelling style, etc are based on the Old School game? Genuine question as someone who hasn’t played it. The thing you quoted doesn’t claim that support can be made retroactively problematic. (General) You didn’t choose to support a white supremecist, you chose to support a game company whose politics you had no reason to know. Choosing to support JG now would constitute choosing to support a white supremecist. And as the saying goes, if you let Nazis drink at your bar, you have a Nazi bar. If a man drinks with three other men he knows are Nazis, there are four Nazis drinking together. We are defined by who and what we knowingly support, just as much as by our own direct personal actions. Yeah I have some issues with its CharGen. Hell yeah, that exactly the sort of thing I want to check out. I am not a fan of a lot of the mechanics of PRE-WoTC D&D that didn’t carry over, and the products that I have seen that attempt an “amoral” approach to setting and tone and adventure stories have been mostly tipped strongly toward immoral instead, because “amoral” isn’t a real thing. So a thematically old school game made by social and ethically conscious creators sounds fantastic. The other thing I’m really curious about is how the old school “vibe” can be captured without the “meat grinder” of a game like Shadowdark where you can start with 1 hp and ability rolls that preclude you even being capable, so you’re best off making several characters and not getting attached to any of them. I tend to find that sort of thing…not so much challenging as simply draining most of my desire to keep playing a game. IMO the newer version of the HeroQuest board game is a beautiful version of D&D with a hyper-simple ruleset, a premise that makes dungeon crawling heroic, and it somehow manages to feel like an old NES era dungeon crawler video game. I also really like how they did the Warlock, but that’s a tangent on a tangent.
