Jumping and landing on your feet

I've always been a bit unclear on the rules for jumping and whether you land on your feet or not. The only thing in the rules is that if you are untrained, you have to beat the DC by 5 to land on your feet. So, therefore, if you have a rank and you succeed on your jump check you land on your feet.

What about jumping down from a height. Eg: Character jumps 20ft, succeeds on Jump check, so takes no damage for 1st 10ft, and 1d6 subdual for the 2nd 10ft. But what rules do people use for whether the character lands on his feet or not?

I would rule that if you succeeded on either the Jump check to reduce damage, or the Tumble check to do the same, you land on your feet. Both checks are DC 15.

IIRC - in the ELH there is a "free stand" at DC 35 in the tumble skill as a free action.

Even if you fail the jump and tumble checks, you might be able to do this after landing, before anyone else can act.

Having just read my copy of the SRD, the only time it explicitly says that you end up prone is when an untrained jumper succeeds on a jump by <5 (whatever type of jump).

The "when appropriate" clause may allow a DM to say the you end up prone in some instances, but i'd be disinclined to do so except for a specific reason.
