Jumping down and Tumble skill

Jump:

If the character intentionally jumps down from a height, the character might take less damage than if the character just fell. If the character succeeds at a Jump check (DC 15), the character takes damage as if the character had fallen 10 feet less than the character actually did.

Tumble:

DC15 - Treat a fall as if it were 10 feet shorter when determining damage.

So, what if you have the Jump and Tumble skills AND choose to jump from 30ft up? What damage do you take? Can you make both difficulty checks and reduce damage to 1d6?

Also if you make your jump check 1d6 (or 10ft worth) is subdual rather that normal damage. So 30ft and you make both checks you would take 1d6 sudual.

My understanding would be that you get one option but not both (a possibility for a 10-foot reduction which overlaps but does not stack, as it were). You already get a synergy bonus by having both skills, they shouldn't cross-pollinate and provide double improvement at the same time.

I would assume both apply.

To my mind - though I admit I'll need to check my PHB before I'll commit :) - the Jump check applies to your takeoff, and the Tumble check to your landing.

So you can shorten a 40 foot fall by the equivalent of 10 feet at the start with a good Jump check, and 10 feet off the end with a good Tumble check, leaving 20 feet in the middle that counts for damage.

Maybe.

My thinking was that the Tumble skill refers to a 'fall' (involuntary) while the Jump skill refers to an 'intentional jump', and so maybe you couldn't use both at once.

But given that there are 2 skill checks to be made, that could allow the use of both skills. But I can be persuaded either way.
