Message: <blockquote data-quote="Mark Hope" data-source="post: 2859603" data-attributes="member: 27051">Thailand is great - been there often.  I love the area around Chiang Mai - fell in love with that city the first time I saw it.  (Plus, if you're a Mage fan, you get to visit the original Doissetep!)  Bangkok is a bit busy for my taste, but I have to agree that the Floating Market is cool, as well as the Golden City.  Pattaya is, er, a bit mad but well worth experiencing (so long as you look but don't touch!)  I'm also very fond of Koh Samui and Koh Tao - the latter is more secluded than the former, but Samui is a lovely place that strikes a good balance between tourist amenities and island charm (give my regards to the Reggae Pub if you stop by!)Gotta agree with the daft realisations that you wind up haggling furiously over 20 cents for a tuk-tuk ride.  Crazy how such a little amount for a farang can make such a difference to a local.  And, almost uniformly, the Thais are some of the friendliest, nicest folks I have ever met, from the islanders to those in the big cities to the Karen tribes up in the mountains.I only just got back yesterday morning from two weeks in Disney World and am deep in the throes of jet lag, but all this talk of the land of smiles has me yearning to spend another 10 hours in a cramped plane, just to trail my toes in the Samui surf...</blockquote>
