Just got some good news

Finally got an offer from a grad school. W00t.

I've been accepted to several PhD programs, but (having retaken my GRE's after blowing them the first time) I finally got an offer that will make it affordable for me to pursue a doctorate.

I'm waiting on word from one other school, but I'm mostly going to take this one, so chances are I'll be at George Mason in Fairfax working on an econ degree starting this fall. Of course that means that I have to start looking for a new gaming group...

Congrats!

That's AWESOME.
I feel your pain as far as costs are concerned. I'm having trouble justifying a masters of illustration with the low income from such a career. Economist though, sounds lucrative...

That's really close to us (The_Universe, Laurel, Xath, Archon, and AIM54) - we live in Alexandria, VA.

When do you plan on moving out here? It's delightful. :) I'm sure that several of us would love to show you the ropes - good gaming stores, a place to find a new group, etc. :D

A PhD in economics? Isn't it pretty much just "as demand increases, prices increase, and vice-versa"? :) Jus' kidding. Congrats.

If you're up in that area early enough, you can attend the Fall MD/VA/DC game day.

GMU - welcome

Adam-

Sorry I'm new at this posting. My husband - metalbard who would not let me use his login -told me you are going to MASON for ECON.....Awesome. I am a second year Ph.D. student, if fact, I probably looked over your application. Anyway, Mason is the bestest econ school in the world - Boudreaux is right.
If you are considering other schools, ask yourself this:
Would you rather get paid $85K crunching numbers in a bank - or- make $50K doing anthropological or institutional research. If you don't immediately jump for the bank job, MASON is the best place to be.
Of course, I am biased. Grew up around here, went to undergrad there. But with faculty like Williams, Boettke, Roberts, Buchanan, Smith, Levy, and especially Iannaccone, and connections to the Mercatus Center and the Center for Public Choice - how could you possibly pass?
What are your research areas? I am currently working on the underdevelopment problems of SE D.C. (Anacostia).
I hope you make the right decision. Remember, no matter where you go, grad school makes you feel bipolar. First year is just hard. But in a few short years, barring no problems, I will be Dr. Messchaert-Smith. If you want to speak with some of the faculty about your decision, please email them. They are always excited to talk with grad students. Call me at *3-1147 to make an appointment with Boettke or email me at econjenny (at) yahoo (dot) com.
Good luck.
