First Post
I just realized that there will be no more UMD and no more wand of MM or fireballs or wands being used like firearms (come on you know you done it before already) in 4e.

hmm...there will be "+" wands, combined "at will" spells, that would actually come closer...and you can get criticals with them!

EDIT: but I just got your point. Still, my post stands.

This sort of thing, while I don't dislike it, will have some serious retcon repercussions in Eberron. How do you have Artficers, Cannith Wand Adepts, and stories of magewrights being the heavy artillery in the Last War when the entire mechanic of what a wand does changes so dramatically? It is going to be interesting to see how they spin that.

This is the main reason that my Eberron campaign will go on hiatus until the rules for artificers and psionics come out. We have both in the campaign right now.

Rocks fall! Eberron dies?

Seriously though, given the heavy handed approach they took to FR, I expect much unhappiness and gnashing of teeth.

I don't know, Voss. They have stated that there will not be a time advance, so all of the work will have to be done through retcon. Is this better or worse for the setting? I sure don't know.

Just because wands and staves have changed function doesn't mean you can't still have spells-on-a-stick. What about rods or wondrous items?

I think artificers will be just fine. Their focus will shift from wands, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Hmm. I tend to think that a retcon, or at least 'this is how it always was' (for the handful of things that actually affect the fluff) is better than the FR approach (which tossed out a lot of material and almost every existing storyline). But most fluff is independent of rules and can completely ignore an edition change.

Actually, the wands aren't all that big a deal. Just require magewrights to use wands for at will or per encounter offensive spells, with knowledge of the spell added to their 'spells known' (or equivalent) only when they are wielding it. Meaning they're fairly helpless without the battlewands, but can still contribute on the battlefield.

Wand adepts can still get benefits from wands- quick draw, TWF for at will powers when using wands, a couple little wand related bonuses.

Naw, artificers will still make wands, but now they'll be called "boom sticks."

-I know, sorry, it just had to be said.
