I misheard him and thought he named his character "Haggis." Then when it was repeated to me, I still heard it wrong. I thought my mishearing of it was funny, not his actual name. Probably if I had seen it spelled first, the episode of laughter wouldn't have occurred. I adore my name. I do put a lot of thought into the important names - partly because I recognize the importance of my own name. Names are vital to setting up atmosphere and mood. A PC's name is important, to my mind. Whenever I find myself in stressful moments, my name always comes to mind and I know I will emerge victorious. My name means "he who conquers." I never forget that. I tend to presume someone naming their character puts a lot of effort and pride in that name. It determines how others see the character and react to the character. One of the coolest names ever for a dragon comes from a movie called "DragonSlayer" - Vermithrax. God, I wish I had come up with that name. A wonderful mixture of vermin and anthrax. If one was going to name a dragon which was a plague upon mankind, this is the name. Consider Vermithrax the Dragon vs. Smoke-Puff the Dragon. Which kind of atmosphere is conveyed by each? J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, Frank Herbert, and many other authors - all of them took meticulous care with their names to provoke a particular mood or characteristic. That is a bit of a game between Mark and I, I have to admit. I know enough about names I can do it reasonably well and fairly quickly - and Mark knows this and will always pressure for a name from me quickly - as a challenge. Although I have my flubs as well - and those are funny. Some are even intended to be funny, especially when I consider the character or place to be comic. However, any names I make up for something important are well thought out. The names of the cities, the names of the authors of the books I gave out - each of those were hand picked to achieve a certain atmosphere. Normally, a bit of fun at a name doesn't bother me. The anger I felt this time was a bit abnormal for me, and probably arised because no one said anything positive before it was attacked by a non-player... and because a lot of work went between Mark and I as we tried to catch just the right tone and sound. Names are a serious business with me. No need. As a player, you have a right to be critical.
