[Kinda OT] Viewing the SRD (software problem)

First off, let me say that I love having the SRD available.

But it infuriates me that they decided to convert it from HTML into RTF. Why did they do this?! ARRGH!!! HTML opens quickly and seamlessly. RTF files don't.

OK, here's my problem. I installed MS Office 2000 on my computer. MS decided that I'd like to have all my RTF files open with MS Word. I politely told it Tools->Folder Options...->File Types->RTF->Change->WordPad. So now when I open an RTF file locally, it opens with WordPad. But, when I go to the SRD, it insists on opening each link in Word (which takes a while to load). I've searched the web high and low for a solutio to this. All I want is to have the SRD files open in WordPad (without having to download them and open them all locally, or uninstall Office, or reformat my computer.)

I'm guessing someone on here has had this same problem, and figured out a way to fix it. If you have any advice, I'd appreciate it.

They didn't convert it from HTML to RTF. The SRD has always been RTF. Other people have converted it.

As to your problem it maybe that word is set to open within IE window and is taking over the assocation.

You could try this
  • Launch Windows Explorer.
  • From the View menu, select Options("Folder Options" if Internet Explorer 4.0 is installed).
  • From the Options dialog box, click the File Types tab.
  • From the listing of "Registered File Types," select "Microsoft Word Document," and click Edit.
  • From the Edit File Type screen, clear the "Browse in same window" check box, which toggles whether a Word document is launched outside of Internet Explorer.
  • Click OK to close the dialog boxes.

Not entirely true. The draft SRD at opengamingfoundation.org was originally in HTML format - something I think is vastly superior for web distribution (as long as you adhere to standards and don't try to do anything fancy).

But that wasn't Wizards, that was 'The Open Gaming Foundation' as seperate orgranisation. The original files I recieved on the closed OGF mailing list were all RTF / Word Docs.

I have no problem opening RTF in MS Word XP (2002) nor in Window's WordPad.

I don't see what the problem with having the SRD on your local hard drive, unless you're running out of space.

I suggest you right-click the RTF file and select "Open With..." which will take you to a list of viewing programs. Make sure you checkmark the box said to use the selected program as default.

Then download them to your system open them in word and click save as html.

Personally I think that the rtf format is better because if you copy and paste HTML into word it screws it up, everytime.

I like the PDF format tht you can get for the MSRD much better. Haven't been able to find a regular equivalent, though...
