That's why my rankings take into account both my own personal experience (what do I think of the film) as well as a more nuanced view as to "how good of a film is this from a technical standpoint, and how important of a film is this?"For me, FMJ is a brilliant film that would be the best film most directors ever did. But it has three flaws (IMO). The first is that it is two excellent halves that don't work together- I understand what Kubrick was trying to do, but IMO, it doesn't work. The second is the emotional climax in the first half, which diminishes (IMO) the second half of the film.The third? Kubrick was notorious was "getting things right." But ... the scenes in the second half feel off. And there's a good reason why. Which sucks, because I love it (the part with them singing the Mickey Mouse part ... perfect) ... but it always throws me a little off. *Okay, I would give a little side-eye to anyone that has Lolita in the top 5. So maybe ... the top 9.</blockquote>
