Yeah, the Anthropomorphic template from Savage Species (I'm guessing that's the one you're talking about) is crazy unbalanced.
The stuff from Races of the Wild, I've heard, is very well balanced. Although there's a thread, currently, devoted to bashing the idea of anthropomorphic humanoids... they just think it's stupid or unoriginal.
