Over in the Experts Thread I mentioned the alt language system I devised for my Eberron campaign...and rather than derailing that thread...here for review/comments...
Attached is the full version, be before you get to that caveats and a short synopsis.
Caveat: This system was designed for my campaign world which uses the Elements of Magic: Revised among some other tweaks. The system was designed enough to be functional up to 14th level, as that is as high as I tend to run games at.
Synopsis:
New cascading skill of Knowledge: Culture. This skill covers language, arts, poems, and veers into local history. Normally you take the skill by the nationality, altho more discrete variants can be found.
Some cultures are related to others. This allows those fluent in Brelandish to converse in a limited fashion with a Cryian. Language skill is not usually a rolled skill test, instead the number of ranks indicate the level of fluency.
Social interaction can be influenced by your fluency. This peice is up to the DM as to when and how to apply the modifiers, but when your Brelandish band wanders into Droam they can expect to be bested at the bargaining table as the local mechants will force them to communicate in the native tongue.
But anyway, I look forward to any comments/suggestions/improvements to this.
And for those of you who want to say 'why all this extra work to little or no gain?'.. well, its because I want a highly detailed world..and language is always a part of that {just look at Tolkien}
Anywho.. thanks for looking!
