Night Court is a fresh Play by Post environment, setting and game for the Legend of the Five Rings 4th Edition ruleset. It is intended to be a good entry-level experience, amenable for both seasoned and new players. We hope we can share with all of you the love and work that we poured in the setting and game, and try to show veterans and newcomers alike the rich adventures and unique roleplaying we can offer. Night Court is just a game, but we hope that it will be soon more than that, the first encounter of an emerging community and the gates of a new setting for the Legend of the Five Rings universe.

The game has a planned release for Fall season, sometime in September/October; each week we will spoof some information about the game and different aspects of the setting, hopefully raising your curiosity.

The Setting In A Nutshell

It is the 9th century and the Beloved Son of Heaven Hantei XXVI is entering his second decade of rule. Continuing his father’s traditions, he has performed great administrative reforms, spreading the power of the Throne through an expanded bureaucracy and turned the Imperial Villa of Shika Kouen into a haven of culture and art. Recent events and the love of Hantei XXVI for said Imperial Villa turned it into the second most important court of the Empire, in some fields eclipsing even the Imperial Court of Otosan Uchi and the bureaucratic juggernauts of Kyuden Otomo and Kyuden Doji. The court of Shika Kouen's is often called Night Court; due to its spontaneous meetings and apparently never-ending backroom dealings.

It has been an era of peace, but the road ahead is bumpy with challenges. Over the past few years several crisis have been building up, and are ready to implode at any moment. Some of the most problematic include:

* A very recent, prolonged, costly and altogether odd conflict between the Unicorn, Dragon and Phoenix. This war left the northern Rokugan impoverished and produced many ronins amongst all the clans involved.

* The theologically cataclysmic event known as the Great Schism is tearing the Seppun, the Dragon and the Brotherhood apart. There seems to be no easy resolution in sight, but if this issue is not quickly contained, it might consume Rokugan in religious warfare.

* Hantei XXVI has no children of his own and the Imperial Heir is his younger brother. The Imperial authority is strong, and some agents in the shadows whisper about the Prophecies of Uikuu and that Rokugan needs a strong Hantei family. Those voices in the darkness look at the many bastards of Hantei XXV, many of them important men and women of the Empire. Are they inevitable danger or beacons of salvation? Either way, everyone sees them as an opportunity.

That's all for this week, and I hope to be able to bring you something juicier next time! Until then, may the Fortunes and the Ancestors guide your actions.

The 9th Century of Rokugan saw many changes, the most important of them triggered by the Return of the Ki-Rin. Here is a quick overview of the many conflicts and events that helped to shape the world and environment in which the player characters and Night Courtiers were born and grew up, as well as establishing good common ground for background.

This week we showcase about 50 years before the events of the Night Court game - events that old sensei, elder statesmen and retired samurai might have lived and learned about; events which have still living and breathing contemporaneous. The world your character's parents and grandparents helped shape. Events older than this belong to the Imperial Histories and the Ikoma Records - whitewashed accordingly.

THE LAST FIFTY YEARS

Year 825

The Moto family rides into the Shadowlands; the Dark Moto are born.

Year 827

The Dark Moto invade Rokugan; the Crab and Unicorn join forces to stop them at the Battle of Chrysanthemum Petals. The Lion and the Crane face each other at the Battle of the Broken Daisho, which turns into a meatgrinder for both sides and only the intervention and ultimate sacrifice of the Phoenix Champion Shiba Toriiko stops the violence.

Year 828

Hantei XXIII mysteriously disappears from Otosan Uchi. Seppun legionaries report the Emperor leaving in the direction of the Eye of the Needle, but are ultimately unable to find him. The Emperor's closest cousin becomes Hantei XXIV. The Seppun daimyo commits seppuku to atone for their failure to protect the Son of Heaven; Hantei XXIV's four brothers join the Seppun to show the new Emperor's Compassion and bolster their numbers and reinforce ties of this Imperial family to the Throne. Seppun Tamoro, the eldest brother of the Emperor, becomes the new Seppun daimyo.

Year 829

Agasha Kitsuki dies, after being tricked by his nemesis Bayushi Shiko. Kitsuki sought to recover incriminating documents about the Shinjo family of the Unicorn; said documents were not only false but poisoned. The fallout of this gambit will spark the Justiciar movement and a bloody feud between the Kitsuki and Soshi families. The feud continues up to the end of the century.

Year 833

The youngest brother of Hantei XXIV, Seppun Seimei, finishes his education and underwents gempukku. Loving and devoted to his brother, he was too sickly and frail to serve him as a Legionary and lacked the gift of the Kami. Instead, Seimei studied with both Kitsune and Otomo and created what would become the astrology-devoted branch of the Otomo family.

Year 834

The ashigaru Hayabusa saves Hantei XXIV from a ninja, dying in the process. His four sons are allowed to form the Falcon Clan. Seppun Tamoro's first son is born: Tokoro.

Year 835

Seppun Seimei marries into the Otomo; his talents impress Hantei XXIV so much that he creates the position of Imperial Astrologer. Otomo Seimei becomes the first Imperial Astrologer.

Year 836

Hantei XXIV dies under mysterious circumstances. Seppun Tamoro takes the Throne as Hantei XXV. The next brother in line, Seppun Tatsuya, becomes Seppun daimyo. Hantei Tokoro becomes the Imperial Heir and arrangements are made for him to be trained with the Crane when he comes of age - as tradition expects.

Year 839

Agasha Daijoku deciphers the secrets of Agasha's bubun - her long lost chemical secrets, revealing the basic materials of everything and the potential of transformation in the elements. The rediscovery of bubun triggers a golden age of science amidst the Agasha and the Dragon.

Year 840

An earthquake and tsunami sink the island where the Imperial Villa was located, off the coast of Crane lands. Amongst the casualties are the Empress-Consort, the Crane Clan Champion and the Miya Daimyo.

Year 841

Hantei XXV marries again, a traditional marriage with a Doji maiden. There is little love between the two of them, but the ambitions of the Son of Heaven demand the support of the Children of Doji; otherwise his many political reforms are doomed to fail. The Emperor starts to build a new Imperial Villa, closer to Kyuden Doji, between the Eye of the Needle and the Sokustel Forest. To finance the massive project, the Emperor exploits the fact that nobody can hunt in the Eye of the Needle - an Imperial Edict issued by his predecessors. The Son of Heaven declares that the pelts of the white stags , magnificent beasts that can be found only in the Eye of the Neddie, are a Sacred Substance and that anyone requesting an audience with thee Emperor or one of his Chosen needs to wear a courtier cap made of white deer pelt. These caps can be bought or rented by the Imperial Court, each worth a daimyo's ramson.

Year 843

Cartographers of the Ikoma find ancient maps that mark some territory of the Phoenix as belonging to the Lion, and the Miya are unable to verify their legitimacy. As tensions rise, Hantei XXV decides to hold Winter Court in Kyuden Ikoma. It turns out to be a very busy Winter Court for the Emperor: he takes a geisha, a Shiba kite-maker and a depressed Ikoma bard as concubines. The Lion-Phoenix tensions keep rising, as the Son of Heaven's sexual adventures do little to solve the crisis.

Year 844

The Emperor holds Winter Court at Shiro Asako, again attempting do address Lion-Phoenix tensions. Skirmishes during Summer destroyed a pair of Phoenix temples and there are important relics unaccounted for, and the Asako suspect they are in the hands of a third party. Accusations fly around, but fail to stick, causing only escalation of the current crisis. The Emperor finds Asako lands even more boring than Ikoma's and seeks entertainment in deflowering the daughter of the daimyo of the Katai vassal family of the Akodo and the niece of the Master of Water. When the Katai heiress gets pregnant and a scandal looms, the Emperor pins the blame in a random Asako bushi that was unfortunate enough to court the Son of Heaven's latest fancy. War seemed inevitable, until the Katai daimyo was accidentally killed in a duel and his daughter took over the family. The unfortunate Asako bushi is coerced to marry the Katai daimyo and accept the child as his, their marriage one of the many arranged to seal uneasy peace between Phoenix and Lion.

Year 845

Claiming health issues, the Emperor cancels Winter Court. The Son of Heavens actually wants to avoid dealing with the Lion and Phoenix for another year. His Ikoma concubine performs illegal suicide, her depression finally pushing her over the edge. A baby girl is delivered to a monastery in Ikoma lands and forgotten by Rokugan.

Year 846

As the Emperor's Shiba courtesan gets pregnant, the Emperor relieves her of her duties to the Throne and sends her packing home with a nice stipend and a vow of silence. The Phoenix clan marry her with a loyal and honorable ji-samurai. Her son with Hantei XXV will grow up to become Shiba Ichezo.

Year 848

The Shinjo send a delegation to the Emperor, proposing an ambitious and daring plan to resettle the northern Dragon Heart Plain, using exotic plants to enrich the poor soil and a line of watchtowers to keep in check the many evils rumored to haunt the region. Quite taken by the second daughter of the Clan Champion, the Emperor is persuaded. Only heavy opposition from the Phoenix makes Hantei XXV fear another Winter Court in their lands, so he sends the Unicorn back to their lands with a negative answer and a young girl ruined for marriage. All is not lost, as a curious son of the Crane Champion takes many of the exotic plants back to his father.

Year 849

The Winter Court is hosted at Kyuden Bayushi, and it is all very nice and entertaining. Every night the Emperor enjoys a different maiden. This time, only one of them fails to take the proper precautions to avoid public dishonor.

Year 850

The construction of the new Imperial Villa is complete. Everyone praises the place as a wonder stolen from Yomi. In honour to the sacred animals who unwillingly gave their life and pelts to make this place possible, it is named the Imperial Villa of Shika Kouen. The Emperor requests from the Scorpion the geisha he enjoyed the most the previous year; she becomes a permanent addition of the new Villa and its most celebrated artist.

Year 854

One of the Emperor's sons with one of his geisha seems to have a talent with go and shogi. The Son of Heaven takes the young child as a partner for games and seems to accept him as his own; at least he has a closer bound with him than any other of his children, recognized or otherwise. This child will become the ronin warlord Nichira.

Year 855

The ambitious Miya Takohime interprets the Emperor's affection for Nichira as a sign of disapproval for the Empress-Consort and the current Imperial Heir, Hantei Tokoro. She poisons the Empress, convinces the Emperor that she was barren and unfit, and suggest the Son of Heaven takes a consort with known fertility. Takohime later maneuvers herself to become the Emperor's third wife. While the plotting of Miya daimyo ultimately fails, she does manage to give the Son of Heaven a daughter...

Year 856

The Emperor decides not to marry Miya Takohime; Hantei XXV does follow her advice of marrying someone of known fertility and marries Yasuki Xin-Tuen, a woman that many suspect bore him two natural sons. Hantei Xin-Tuen is no longer at her prime, but she still manages to give the Emperor the second heir he desires - Hantei Kagetori.

Year 858

Having finished his gempukku, Hantei Tokoro undergoes Musha Shugyo. He eludes the Honor Guard his father sends and disappears into the wilderness of Rokugan.

Year 859

While in Phoenix lands, Hantei Tokoro joins an Asako scribe's escort as a ronin yojimbo. The Asako was trying to recover the Prophecies of Uikku, lost during the skirmishes between Lion-Phoenix. Tokoro found the truth about the content of the Prophecies and stole them, accidentally killing the Asako in the process. A criminal on the run, Tokoro disappeared into the shadowy corners of the Emerald Empire. The Prophecies of Uikku shook him to the core and a horrified Tokoro started to doubt his place in the Celestial Order, believing that he would be the Last Hantei that would bring Fu Leng back to Ningen-do.

Year 860

A second legitimate son is born to the Emperor: Hantei Kagetoki. As Tokoro is assumed dead, he is declared Imperial Heir.

Next week we will reveal events that actually happened during the player character's lives.

This week we finish the timeline, depicting the events of the last twenty years or so. If old enough, your character might have lived through these events and might even have taken an active part on them. If he is too young, his siblings, parents, sempai and friends were not unaffected. Those that follow are the most likely to have shaped your character in a personal way.

THE LAST TWENTY YEARS

Year 861

Hantei Tokoro enters Dragon lands. Still unaware of Kagetoki's existence and believing himself the Last Hantei, Tokoro searches in secret for a way to deny what he perceives as his dark fate. The Dragon Clan Champion orders the Agasha and the Kitsuki to let the "ronin" Tokoro study with them. Nobody questions this, taking this the latest of many unusual orders from their liege.

Year 864

Hantei XXV dies. Hantei Kagetori is to take the Throne, but Seppun Tatsuya plans to make his five-years old nephew a puppet-emperor for his new regime, and has found an ally in the Emerald Champion and former sensei of Hantei Tokoro, Kakita Chou. Tokoro gathers allies and sneaks into the Imperial Court, challenging and killing the Emerald Champion in the process. Tatsuya tries to kidnap Kagetori, but is killed by Tokoro while running through the streets of Otosan Uchi. Hantei Tokoro becomes Hantei XXVI, but these events cursed him in the eyes of Tengoku and deeply affected the young Kagetori - he would never recover from the experience and his fragile mind would soon start eroding.

Year 865

Hantei XXVI declares an Emerald Championship, which is won by Shiba Ichezo. The Emperor discovers that not only Ichezo was his half-brother, the other finalist of the Iajutsu competition was Nichira - another natural son of Hantei XXV. Jubilant, the Emperor declares this a sign of Destiny. "A man is supposed to have brothers, true companions in adversity. Only this way he can be Great, as the Kami showed us in their Divine brotherhood." The Hantei name was bestowed upon those two men. In order to appease the many concerns of the Elemental Council, Hantei XXVI takes the daughter of the Asako family daimyo as Empress-Consort. The dignity and piety of the Empress Hantei Mari soon make her a favorite amongst the people.

Year 867

Hantei XXVI visits the Imperial Villa of Shika Kouen and falls in love with the place. It soon becomes the Imperial residence for Summer and Winter, and over the years its court - called unofficially “Night Court" - grows to outshine even the Imperial Court in Otosan Uchi. Displeased with the original vision his father had for the Imperial Villa, Hantei XXVI starts a massive contest, open to all craftsmen and artisans of the Empire, where he seeks an architect to renovate Shika Kouen. A mysterious heimin woman, shunned by the Brotherhood and with a dark reputation manages to win the majority of the events and Hantei XXVI's heart. The Emperor raises her to samurai caste and makes her his First Concubine, ignoring all the scandal this creates. The Ikoma and Shosuro quickly produce documents claiming that she was of samurai blood, the granddaughter of a ronin, silencing open protest and condemning all the whining to happen behind shoji screens. The woman took the name of Sukoshi-Joou at her ascension.

Year 868

One of the Hantei XXV's geisha seeks asylum in Dragon lands. Accompanying her is a young girl that is taken in by the Kitsuki.

Year 869

The Kuni gather in a moot, where they conclude that something very unusual is happening in the heart of the Shadowlands. The number of oni has been decreasing and even the Dark Moto have retreated far from the frontier of the Empire. A mad Hiruma scout reports a city of tents of leather and bone, where Moto Tsume gathers a mighty horde, but other family members dismiss the notion. The information gathered in this moot is kept secret even from the closest allies of the Crab and the Clan Champion slowly reassigns troops away from the Wall. Raids from the Sons of Hida become a staple of Summer.

Year 871

The rule of Hantei XXVI turns out to be an enlightened time of culture, science and peace. The only major conflict to erupt during his rule was the strange tug-of-war called “War of the Broken Wagon” by the Ikoma historians.

Even without sanction of Hantei XXV, Shinjo colonists proceeded with their plan to retake the Dragon Heart Plain. While the Unicorns fortified in the north, the Phoenix opposed the plan and mobilized their forces in the south, the Master of Earth raising a fortress overnight. As both sides are kept in standstill, the Dragon join in the conflict, without explanation or sense, raiding the supply lines of both sides - thus giving the war its unusual name. This war drags for three long years of attrition, with little skirmishes or advances over the no-man land.

Year 872

Miya Takohime's daughter completes her gempukku and takes the name Miya Rinji. Takohime leaves the daimyoship to her daughter but remains in an advisory role instead of retiring to a monastery. Miya Rinji’s resemblance to Hantei XXV is uncanny.

Year 873

Already censured and white-washed by whispering Shosuro and Ikoma, “The Schism of 873" was the defining moment of Hantei XXVI's rule. This event radically shaped the way the Son of Heaven interacted with those of religious persuasion, specially members of the Seppun family and the Dragon Clan.

The Emperor always had the best of the relationships with the Dragon, and it was with great anticipation that he arranged for Winter Court 873 to be held at Shiro Mirumoto. The Son of Heaven was looking forward to finally met and discuss some matters that worried him with the Dragon Champion, as his wisdom was legendary. Perhaps he could cast new insight on the fate of the Hantei and the Prophecies of Uikku.

Things went downhill fast. The Emperor presented to the Court two polemic, borderline insane and blasphemous ideas he wished to apply. The first was the creation of the Hantei family, that would be responsible for the education, raising and appointment of heirs to the Throne. The second was a proposal for assimilation of the Tortoise Clan as a proper Imperial family. The Seppun and Miya families protested against both issues, with many of the diplomats sent to the Winter Court committing seppuku in response.

Already with his nerves wrecked and watching his dream Winter Court crumble around him, the Son of the Heaven could barely stand the restrictions imposed by the Dragon Clan Champion in their meetings. During one of these rare encounters, the Emperor detected something terrible in the leader of the Dragon. Records state that the Son of Heaven called his guards and accused the ruling Togashi to be an impostor. The “impostor" committed seppuku and his mysterious heir came down from the High House of Light, presenting himself as the new Dragon Clan Champion.

As soon as Emperor set eyes upon the new leader of the Dragon, he stormed out of the mountains, preferring to risk the full-strength of Winter instead of suffering Dragon hospitality for yet another day. His last words to the court were “Everything Dragon is lies."

On the way back to Otosan Uchi, the Emperor stopped in Kyuden Seppun. The Seppun daimyo was well aware of the events that transpired in Shiro Mirumoto and allegedly tried to calm down the Son of Heaven, finding an ally in the person of the Empress-Consort. These talks ended badly, as both parties changed subjects from the Dragon Clan to the unorthodox plans of the Emperor, his choice of concubines and the close relationship the Son of Heaven had with the illegitimate sons of his father. When the Seppun daimyo suggested that the Fortunes be consulted about how fitting the Emperor's half brothers were to their offices, the Son of Heaven stood up, angry at the implication that he had somehow wronged in his judgement. “Who needs the Fortunes with men like them at my side?” Another court from which the Emperor stormed out, a common sight that Winter.

With the Seppun and the Dragon at odds with the Emperor, the Son of Heaven found no rest back at Otosan Uchi. The City of the Thousand Temples was nothing to him, not anymore. He felt it rejected him, the curse from Tengoku growing stronger and his faith dimmer. The Emperor spent the rest of the Winter making secret preparations, and as soon as Spring came he sailed away, never to return to the Capital. The local peasants felt abandoned by the Heavens and massive riots and unrest followed. The Seppun and the Emerald Champion mobilized their Legions and entered the city, dividing Otosan Uchi between the two forces and imposing martial law.

Away from these problems, the Emperor ruled at the Night Court.

Year 874

In a decisive strike of remarkable tactical brilliance, Hantei Nichira leads two Imperial Legions and takes both the Unicorn and Phoenix fortresses of the Dragon Heart Plain, ending the war that had been ebbing the strength of the northern reaches of the Empire for far too long. While successful, this lighting campaign was not sanctioned by the Emerald Champion and conflict escalates between the two half-brothers, soon getting out the capabilities of the Emperor to manage. While the Unicorn clan officially withdrew from the Dragon Heart Plain, a widowed settler that lost her husband and sons trying to hold these lands turns ronin and assumes leadership of a pair of villages. Phoenix and Dragon veterans flock to her banner. This ronin leader is Miyuko, formerly of the Shinjo and another of Hantei XXV's children. The Kolat look at her with interest and Miyuko willingly takes their help, wishing to wage a vendetta against Hantei Nichira. The followers of Tora are very keen to grant her all the support she needs.

Year 875

Hantei Nichira and Hantei Ichezo always disagreed upon the use of the Imperial Legions and military tactics, the former being fanatical for Sun Tao while the later swearing by Leadership. The events of the previous year turned scholarly arguments into rallying cries. The Emperor finally decides to intervene, by marrying Nichira to the aging Asahina daimyo and removing him from public and military life. Asahina Nichira seems to find some peace in this change, and spends his days at the forge, trying to perfect another art.

Year 876

The year starts with good auspices as the Third Concubine of Hantei XXVI announces she is pregnant with a child from the Emperor. These issues are often kept private, but the Son of Heaven is filled with joy and believes that the people of Rokugani need this symbol of hope. The new heir soon becomes the talk of the Great of the Empire.

Otomo Seimei discovers some distressing omens and confides with both the Scorpion Clan Champion and Sukoshi-Joou. Pooling their resources, the three discover that the child of the Third Concubine is not of the Hantei blood but from an affair with a minor bureaucrat of nearby Kyuden Doji. They try to solve the matter quietly, but both Hantei XXVI's keen senses and his curse betrays them: the Emperor is made aware. Having lost Face for the issue, the Son of Heaven cannot show Compassion. The Third Concubine and her lover are executed in the middle of Autumn, ending that seasonal Night Court in blood.

As Winter approaches, the Imperial Advisor sends letter to many courtiers across the Empire, calling for an extraordinary season of Night Court.

We continue our rounds of preview material with one of the Major NPCs and one of the few “canon” characters of the 9th century: the founder of the Otomo Astrology School and the first Imperial Astrologer.

Otomo Seimei

When Seppun Tamori became Hantei XXIV, it was apparent to anyone that the Hantei line was the victim of threats that the Seppun were unable to defend against. Hantei XXII was attacked by a maho-tsukai disguised as his bride, while Hantei XXIII found himself led into a spirit realm by a kitsune disguised as a small child, an event that would shape his life and end in a mysterious and tragic note.

The new protectors of the Hantei had an unlikely origin.

Seimei was the younger brother of Hantei XXIV, and the fourth in the line of Imperial succession. At a young age, he was stricken with a consumptive sickness that prevented him from being able to learn the way of the sword, or even leave Kyuden Seppun until he reached the age of gempukku. However, his oldest brother always treated Seimei with kindness and respect, and Seimei loved him dearly. As he grew older, his greatest wish was to repay this courtesy by devoting his life to the Emperor's protection.

Unfortunately for Seimei, he was too weak to train as a Seppun Guardsman and he lacked the ability to speak with the kami. Inspiration came to him one night while he looked up the stars: As an Imperial and brother to the Emperor, he was one of the mortals closest in relation to the Celestial heavens themselves. Of all the mortals in the Empire, would he not be among the best at understanding their hidden meanings? At Seimei's request, hundreds of sages were brought to Kyuden Seppun to become his sensei. Unfortunately, most turned out to be charlatans or shugenja relying on the whispers of the kami rather than the hidden messages of the Heavens.

Seimei finally found true wisdom in an ancient member of the Kitsune family of the Fox Clan, who taught Seimei how to read the Heavens, and Seimei spent the rest of his life refining the old man’s teaching, learning the proper methods of divining the future. Seimei would become the first Imperial Astrologer and founded the Otomo Astrology Academy, a very small but important group of courtiers who defend the Emperor from supernatural threats and divine the Heaven's intent.

Seimei might not have been able to protect Hantei XXIV from his ultimate fate, but he served his successor and brother Hantei XXV with the same absolute devotion, being raised to great honours by his years of good service. The plots and attacks thwarted by Seimei are numbered in the hundreds, and it was with a broken heart that the Astrologer discovered that his last surviving brother was planning to take over Rokugan by using their nephew as a political puppet. For the good of the Empire, Seimei had to betray his brother to safeguard his two nephews.

With the ascension of Tokoro as Hantei XXVI, Seimei retreated from public life. He continued to serve as Imperial Astrologer, and the Empire has profited greatly from it, but he avoided any significant political involvement. His already fragile health took a turn for the worse six years ago, and a talented replacement is yet to present himself. Lack of direct action from Seimei allowed tragedies like the Schism to happen; the old man has been forced to return to Hantei XXVI's side and is giving the last strength in his sickly and venerable body to the Hantei dynasty.

A new threat is rising. Seimei does not need to read it in the stars; he feels it in his aching bones. It seems that the influence of both Jigoku and Tengoku have been waning from Ningen-do, something that makes no sense whatsoever. While the Crab observe a welcomed respite from the Moto-invigorated Shadowlands Horde, the readings of the Heavens are becoming more and more difficult to interpret.

What will the consequences of these disconnections be?

Seimei has a theory: something else is coming, for nature abhors emptiness.

Night Court will be influenced by three Paths, named for each of the Three Sins. These Paths are what can be called “story arcs" of the game. For each path there is a Thematic Major NPC, which better represents the mood of the Path and with whom players can associate. Each character in Night Court is strongly attached to one Path, depending on their skills, abilities and Sins. Characters are not restricted to one Path; in fact, far from it. The events and opportunities of a given path will influence the others, as nothing will happen in a vacuum. That said, rare will be the character with the skills to handle all the three Paths and choices will have to be made along the way. Ignoring the Paths altogether, while an option, will result in the loss of many opportunities to affect the fate of the Empire.

Path of Fear

Otomo Seimei walks the path of Fear.

Seimei saw brother after brother die and stopped more threat against the Hantei dynasty than anyone else alive. Yet he knows that one day he will fail: one blind spot will sucker punch his nephew and dust will claim all the work of Hantei Tokoro.

Hantei XXVI entrusted Seimei with knowledge of Uikku's prophecies about the return of the Fu Leng and the dooms of the Empire. Unlike his nephew, Otomo Seimei isn't worried; he advises Hantei XXVI wisely, believing that there is only so much that Tokoro could do avert the prophecy: overt actions will only further anger the Heavens and turn the prophecy into a self-fulfilling one. Destiny favors the mortal man, but mostly the subtle and clever one.

Otomo Seimei currently battles Fear for different reasons.

The influence of Jigoku upon Ningen-do is retreating, many Lost temporarily regaining their sanity and committing seppuku and many Oni disappearing deep into the Shadowlands or falling in deep slumber. While this is seen by the Crab as a source of joy, Seimei and his students stole from the Heavens a subtle secret: Tengoku too, is retreating.

While the Hole in the Sky remains just as wide as before, even if the kami are just as eager to reply to prayers, the links with the direct influence of the Fortunes and other spiritual entities of Tengoku have waned. What does this mean for Rokugan? So far there seem to be no adverse effects, but nobody knows the long-term consequences.

Maybe the Schism is a cause of the Heavens' withdrawal. Maybe it is a consequence. Maybe all those minor and major events are correlated. If there is even the remote possibility that this might be true, what has changed between the relationship between the Spirit Realms and Ningen-do? These mysteries flank the Path of Fear; would they ever be solved?

Another week, another preview. This time we showcase none other than his Majesty, the Beloved Son of Heaven, Hantei XXVI.

Hantei XXVI

The Imperial Heir, Hantei Tokoro, has a very complicated life. Son of the Seppun daimyo and a minor Doji courtier, he became the apparent Imperial Heir after the death of Hantei XXIV and the ascension of his father to the Emerald Throne.

After tense exchanges of Imperial power and the aftermath of the birth of the Dark Moto, Hantei XXV had an Empire to reorganize. Such demands forced him to give little or no attention to his son and leaving Tokoro in the company of his second wife, a cold and petty woman that had seen to it that the Imperial Heir was enrolled in the Kakita Dueling Academy at an early age.

During Tokoro’s upbringing, his only link to the Imperial families was his uncle, the Imperial Astrologer Otomo Seimei. Loving his nephew as much as he loved his older brothers, Seimei made great effort to keep close contact with the Imperial Heir. Both him and his sensei at the Academy, Kakita Chou, ended up acting as surrogate paternal figures and role models for the young Heir.

After his gempukku and a reasonable performance at Tsuma, everyone expected Tokoro to return to Otosan Uchi and rejoin his father's court. Kakita Chou had become the Emerald Champion earlier that year and Otomo Seimei was obsessing with distressing omens about Hantei XXV's health, so the Heir felt no ties pulling him to a place that was so foreign to him. Instead of doing what was expected, he departed on a Musha Shugyo. The Emperor was outraged and sent a elite Seppun guard to track Tokoro down and bring him to Otosan Uchi, but the Heir was cunning, enlisting in a Mantis vessel and spending a season at sea, returning to the mainland only after the waters had calmed down and the Seppun all but given up on their search.

Tokoro wished to visit the Phoenix lands and learn some of their secrets, but found there was little warmth amongst the Clan of Shiba for a ronin not blessed by the kami. Learning that there was a lot of demand for mercenaries in Honored Treaty City, Tokoro traveled there. He met Asako Takei, a minor bureaucrat and scholar, who believed that copy of a rare and secretive Phoenix prophecy was being held within a shrines destroyed by recent Lion raids. Tokoro and other wave men enlisted with the scholar as the latter prepared to brave the ruins and recover the prophecy.

Takei was right, and in the ruins they recovered one of the few copies of the Prophecies of Uikku. Having grown close enough to the Asako to gain his trust, Tokoro sneaked a peek into the Prophecies and was transfigured by what he read. When startled by his employer, Tokoro accidentally killed Takei in his confusion and ran away into the night, the Prophecies in his pack.

Tokoro would only resurface more than one year later, half-mad and three-quarters dead, a mysterious nun dropping him at Shiro Mirumoto. The Imperial Heir was restored to health and sanity, and to everyone’s surprise, word came from the High House of Light that he was to be allowed to learn the secrets of the Kitsuki and Agasha.

For years Tokoro researched into the meaning behind the Last Hantei that would bring Fu Leng into the world. At first, Tokoro believed himself to be such creature, learning of Kagetori's birth only many years after the fact. There was at least one other Hantei, so his generation would not doom the Emerald Empire. Growing more relaxed, he started making plans to rejoin Rokugani society and take his place besides his father and brother.

Then Hantei XXV died. Assassins came into the night and almost succeeded in killing Tokoro. Assassins that he, using his Kitsuki training, tracked back to his uncle, the daimyo of the Seppun family, Seppun Tatsuya. The Dragon Clan Champion then informed Tokoro that Tatsuya and the Emerald Champion planned to make his younger brother a puppet Emperor and lends him all the men and help he can provide. Escorted by a Dragon army and reinforced by Lion troops opposing Seppun Tatsuya's regency, Tokoro entered the Imperial Court. In the Court of the Shining Prince, Tokoro challenges and kills Kakita Chou. Seppun Tatsuya cowardly flees with Hantei Kagetori and tries to use the latter as an hostage to ensure his retreat, but Tokoro personally hunts him down, saving his little brother. Only after ending the life of the traitors does Tokoro accept the Throne, abandoning his name and becoming Hantei XXVI.

On that moment, Tokoro learned that he was cursed. In the instant of clarity that followed his investiture, he felt the rage of the Heavens at his actions and his reluctance to let Fate run its course. He then knew that he would father no children and that he was cursed to always find the Inconvenient Truth and no comforting lies.

Lesser men would have been crushed. Hantei XXVI only saw the heavenly curse as positive reinforcement: it was on his hands to thwart Destiny.

The Phoenix clan were particularly upset about the way the succession had occurred, and in order to appease them Hantei XXVI took Asako Mari, the daughter of the Asako daimyo, as his Empress-Consort. There was little love in the marriage and many cold nights awaited the Empress, but she served the Hantei well as a diplomat to the Phoenix and the Brotherhood.

Hantei XXVI soon became a workaholic, an enlightened monarch that worked hard and partied harder, never caught sleeping or taking a break from the poisonous world of court. The Emperor was a master at recognizing talent and delegating, but never truly forgot an issue, remaining always was on top of the situation. He wasn't afraid of playing dirty, and once the Imperial Advisor joked that he was the Scorpion Emperor. None of his successors repeated similar jokes.

The twelve years of rule of Hantei XXVI saw peace, prosperity and an explosion in arts and sciences. The Emperor would find love in his concubines that was denied in his marriage, especially with a peasant nun that he raised to samurai, the scandalous Sukoshi-Joou. The work-hard-live-harder lifestyle of the Emperor would eventually lead to the Schism of 863 and the abandonment of Otosan Uchi in favor of the Imperial Villa.

And many, many scandals...

So that’s Hantei XXVI, a man that when confronted with the Heavenly Decree that the Hantei would rule a Thousand Years of Peace, but be extinguished into a Thousand Years of Darkness for daring to raise steel against Lord Moon, said “No”. Those that follow on Hantei XXVI's footsteps walk a path of big decisions and great actions, with world-shaking consequences and the lives of thousands on the gambit. It is easy to slip when taking the...

The Path of Regret

Hantei Tokoro walks the Path of Regret.

Hantei XXVI does not let Fear or Desire gain any ground in his heart; his love for Joou is dutiful and tempered by reason, and he has nothing to Fear for the future of the Hantei - he is painfully aware that only the wrath of Heavens awaits them.

Regret walks in his footsteps. Could he have tried to find a compromise with his uncle and his sensei? Was it his right to claim the Throne, after he lost his way and the actions he performed during his time as ronin? Was he really meant to learn of the Prophecies of Uikku or his defiance was dictated by madness and doomed to be a futile effort? Did he do the right thing in turning away from his Dragon companions after learning of Togashi's deceptions or will the Schism break the Empire apart?

The life of Hantei XXVI is made of a succession of crisis and his attempts to resolve them, as well as dealing with the consequences of lives taken and enemies slain. All Sins eventually end up in the Imperial Villa.

Over the course of the Night Court, the Clan delegations will gather to advice the Hantei on many major and minor crisis. The results of those sessions will shape the Empire

The Path of Regret Mechanic:Endeavour

When interacting in the Night Court, delegates representing their factions will often have the opportunity to nudge the fate of the Empire in a direction favorable to them - or at least harmful to political opponents. Or so they hope.

This is accomplished by Endeavours, measure of your self-appointed challenges, ambitions and how much successful you've been achieving them. Endeavours are classified as Minor, Major and Decisive.

Minor Endeavours are something that can be declared by seizing an opportunity with a good post, a nice roll and a clear intent. They are the simplest to create and accomplish, but they also last the shortest in duration and reach. Only a large number of Minor Endeavours nudging opinion in one direction has any hopes of impacting the world beyond the Night Court.

Major Endeavours usually represent the work of days or weeks at court. They are the most common, and usually a faction seeks to pass a good number of Major Endeavours, setting their course for the rest of the year.

Decisive Endeavours require risky, abrupt, clear action and are often the work of the entire court season. Once a a Decisive Endeavour is set in motion, it will quickly gain momentum and if not stopped quickly by other contradictory Endeavours will impact the life of everyone in the Empire.

Each faction has a number of Starting Influence points - either <redacted> for Great Clans or <redacted> for Imperial Families and Minor Clans. At the start of the Night Court season, securing the positions, expenses and favours required to get assigned to the Imperial Villa. Your faction loses a number of Influence per character equal to 10 x that character Status when it joins the Night Court.

You don't require Influence to start Endeavours - just sense of opportunity and ambition. But you can attach the hard-earned koku, favours and resources of the clan. This backing not only gives the Endeavour some extra credibility - the word of samurai is reality, but some people still prefer to see silk and steel on the table - but opens the opportunity to increase your faction's Influence.

When you state the Endeavour and it is approved, your faction can invest Influence up to a certain limit <redacted>. If the Endeavour is successful, you get back the triple of invested Influence. If the Endeavour fails, the Influence is lost.

A particular point is worth bringing up, as many a courtier’s career can end due to this misconception. Influence is not koku, even if it can also be koku. Influence is a collective sum of raw wealth, primary goods, veteran troops, trade goods, war supplies, schooling positions, artwork and artists, etc..
Anything that can be a diplomatic asset translates into Influence. Koku is one thing, but samurai are not merchants pinching zeni; offering any deal in court with a clumsy exchange in koku would have you shunned in any court except Kyuden Gotei and the Yasuki Estates. To do so in the Imperial Court would be political suicide for even the most bold of the Yasuki or Mantis courtiers. No, koku-based exchanges have a place in unofficial meetings or the marketplace. For example, if the<redacted > delegation decides to sell some of their prized wood for well needed koku, they will not ask for 20000 koku in court. No, they will ask for an adequate donation to be made to the temples around the sacred woodlands, that the <redacted> priests will see that are used properly, and whose “proper value” will be later accorded by minor clerks.

Each faction will have unique opportunities to invest their Influence. Each faction will also have pointer to what their Influence can represent and the sort of assets they are lacking.

The final Path is revealed this week, as well as information on the most scandalous and probably the most powerful woman of the 9th Century.

This is a particularly big update, as we wrap up all the established plot points of Night Court.

Sukoshi-Joou
First Concubine of Hantei XXVI
Caretaker of the Golden Doves

The girl Sakana was the daughter of a moneylender's daughter and a Yasuki-sponsored fishmonger, who grew up in a household wealthier than most buke samurai's. The only child of the rich mercantile couple, she was pampered and their parents made sure that she had the best that koku could buy. While a merchant cannot display wealth above his station, knowledge was easier to hide than silk or steel, so they saw to it that Sakana had a remarkable education, well beyond what was expected from a heimin, studying with scribes and reading almost ten different books. After discreet and generous donations to a neighboring monastery, Sakana departed from her parents' house to study with the monks. Sakana's parents eventually went bankrupt and died in poverty, as their samurai patrons began making one bad investment after another.

The young nun named Ai was instigated to leave her monastery, as most of its members were male and complained that her blooming beauty was very distracting. Instead of wandering as expected from a worldly monk, Ai started a legal case against the entire Brotherhood, claiming the discrimination was a sin against Heavens and unbecoming of those seeking enlightenment. She ended up being cast out of the entire Brotherhood and denounced as a heretic.

The following year, a mysterious singer named Komadora showed herself at Winter Court in Kyuden Doji. It was said that her song caused Spring to rush in the middle of Winter; it was also said that the second son of the Kakita daimyo died in a duel for her beauty.

When the Unicorn Champion announced the plans to build a new castle near the Crab border in order to help the White Guard efforts in assisting the Crab against their cursed kin, a ronin architect named Yuan presented himself. Against all odds, Yuan's remarkable designs were declared the most efficient and structurally sound and applied to the new wooden castle. Yuan was found dead in a ditch three days later, his cute and bright assistant and the 10, 000 koku reward missing.

The peasant actress and playwright Nanako surprised everyone at the Emperor's Winter Court in Kyuden Seppun. Her vicious plays dropped heavy critics and implications that the Seppun daimyo was using his family influence over the Brotherhood to turn the religious orders of Rokugan into political tools. Nobody was sure who was the patron sponsoring Nanako, but that didn't stop rumours and accusations. When the dust settled after the wave of shii duels that followed, Nanako was nowhere to be found.

A nameless nun tended to the mad ronin Tokoro and took him to Dragon lands. She disappeared just as fast.

A shy but very talented woodcarver and painter named Ryuko caught the attention of the nobility of Ryoko Owari, and despite her demure personality, she depicted compelling and arousing erotic artwork. The rebellious son of the Soshuro daimyo, Soshuro Tsuno, took a liking to Ryuko and eloped with her.

Some of Ryuko's pieces arrived at the Night Court, and the peasant artist and her “patron”/”husband” were invited by the Emperor himself to join him in his Villa. Hantei XXVI planned a series of events to select his new concubine, and to everyone's shock and awe, not only did the peasant artist ace event after event, she rebuffed all attempts to discredit or banish her from the court. In the end, Hantei XXVI picked Ryuko as his concubine, causing a great scandal by uplifting her to samurai cast. Leading the outrage was her husband, who the Emperor silenced by giving him a taisa position in the Imperial Legions. As he continued to seek some sort of retribution for the Emperor taking his wife, Hantei XXVI assigned that Legion with the task of supporting the Badger Clan. That Legion has been up north ever since.

Upon taking her place as First Concubine, Ryuko discarded yet another name and became Sukoshi-Joou. She was also appointed the useless but prestigious office of Caretaker of the Golden Doves - responsible for making sure that there are always pigeons and Heralds ready in case the Emperor needs to send an urgent message - and slowly seized enough influence to rival the Empress-Consort.

Sukoshi-Joou is a mysterious woman, praised as the most gorgeous of this age and the rumours about her past provide material to endless songs and pillow books. Artists flock to her patronage and courtiers love to hate her. She is very cold, both physically and emotionally, the only warmth in her person belonging to Hantei XXVI. She is very intelligent and refined, and her wit is considered equal or surpassing her beauty; many of the examples that made into the Histories were related to her brutal feud with the Seppun daimyo, as she never forgave the Seppun family and the Brotherhood for destroying her life of quiet contemplation. Sukoshi-Joou is also a prolific poet, author, playwright and is the sole architect and decorator behind the improvements made by Hantei XXVI to Shika Kouen. She is the best friend of the Empress-Consort, and has been supporting Hantei Mari's gambling vice - just enough for her to keep betting, not enough for her to pay her debts. They might be good friend, but friendship mean nothing when Clan and Honour come calling - it is good to have a more solid leverage.

All in all, Sukoshi-Joou is the only person that truly understands the frustrations and the weight placed upon Hantei XXVI's shoulders, his confidant and the only other person that knows the full details of the Prophecies of Uikku and how they shape every day of the Emperor. Unlike her love, she isn't blind to the madness of the Imperial Heir Kagetori, but knows that the day she brings that sad theme up will be the day their love ends. Sukoshi-Joou would give everything to gift Hantei XXVI's with the children he so much wishes, but the Fortunes are cruel. Twice she got pregnant and twice she miscarried. The last such incident was just last Spring and it almost claimed her life. Sukoshi-Joou has yet to fully recover, and leaves the pleasure of the Emperor to minor courtesans, while challenging Hantei XXVI's intellectually, the way only she can.

And now, the Path of Desire, the Allure mechanics and... the list of courtly events!

The Path of Desire

The allure of Desire is not a stranger to the woman that goes by the name of Sukoshi-Joou. Since early age she has been fascinated with the world of the samurai, its culture and cruel dualities - something that couldn't be emulated by wealth alone. Theology and spirituality tempered and shaped this interest into true understanding about the human nature and the warrior-caste of Rokugan. She knows most samurai better than they know themselves.

Many call Sukoshi-Joou a Sinful woman; nothing could be more wrong. Sukoshi-Joou has done many condemnable things, but she holds no Regret over her actions, considering each of them necessary for the good of the Empire and for her ascension. She accomplished many bold and foolish things, never hesitating due to Fear. And she never fell into the traps of Desire, flirting with it and making it a mere tool.

For all the warmth of her voice, captivating personality and great empathy, Sukoshi-Joou is so cold it is downright scary. At the twilight of her youth and vitality, she pays a close attention to the appointment of the Third Concubine; the Second Concubine is Sukoshi-Joou's creature, the prize cattle amongst the shapeless mass of flesh that fills the Deer Park. As much as it hurts Sukoshi-Joou, she has to face the fact that the Third Concubine will be her successor for the affection of Hantei Tokoro. She also has to face that if the Heavens changes it's mind and blesses the Hantei line again, the children of Hantei XXVI will be born from the Third Concubine's womb, not Hantei Mari's or her own.

She will try to find love for that woman or child. Or at the very list, make them her creatures.

Path of Desire Mechanic: Allure

Allure represents the attraction that female characters exert upon the Divine person of the Son of Heaven. And of course, the general infatuation of the Night Court with her - after all, they know better than to disapprove of the Emperor's tastes. By the end of the current court season, the female with the highest Allure becomes the new concubine of Hantei XXVI.

Many factors determine the Starting Allure of a given female character, but those that will rely only on this earlier disadvantage/advantage will not go far. The main way to gain Allure is through certain events; any female courtier that gives a good performance will increase her Allure to the Court and the Emperor. In other events, any character might dedicate their victory to a female of their choice, "championing" for her; they increase the Allure of the female character and position themselves to reap political profits in case she becomes the Third Concubine.

A female will become the Favorite for the Third Concubine position if one of the following flags is true:

- She gains 3+ Allure points in a single week;
- She remains the top contender for three entire IC days without being tied or dethroned by other contenders (include the effects of the interim event of that week for any possible changes in ranking);
- She has unanimous support from all the Great Clans (good luck with that);
- She has more Major Endeavors that improve the perception of the Night Courtiers than any other female courtier.

If two or more female courtiers fulfill this requirements, the one that fulfills most of them is considered the Favorite. If they still tie, the question is still pretty nebulous and there is no actual favorite yet.

The Favorite is considered to have Darling of the Court (Night Court). Whoever is the Favorite at the end of the current season will kept that Advantage forever - even if another ends up becoming the Third Concubine.

We know some people enjoy these more than anything in a game, so here is a list of the more “traditional" courtly events that are tied to the Path of Desire.

Do not forget that there are many more events tied to the other two Paths, but due to their nature, they will be kept under close wraps.

We now start a series of previews about the status of the internal politics of the Clans of Rokugan.

The State of the Clans - Crab

Crab Clan Champion - Hida Sachiko (F)

This wizened, ancient woman rules the clan of Hida with an iron will, her eyes still filled with fire and rage as her body waste away. Sachiko had no easy championship. Originally born to the Scorpion, she married the youngest son of the Crab Clan Champion. Her father in-law felt prey to a Dark Moto ambush, and her brothers and sisters in-laws all lived short and brutish lives. As a Crab Champion died in a shii duel against the Ide family daimyo due to a foolish misunderstanding, Sachiko's husband ascended to the leadership of the Crab. Even him did not last for long, falling prey to the machinations of a powerful group of Kuni maho-tsukai.

Sachiko was left alone with her children; many amongst the clan pressured her to favor one of the many orphaned nephews and nieces of the kuge, but she was not having any of that. She was going to be regent for her own children and challenged anyone that disagreed.

The Crab knew better than to face the mother of a Hida. Sachiko's regency continues today, almost thirty years later. Hida Sachiko was a paranoic champion obsessed with preserving her family and legacy; even now, with grandsons and granddaughters, she still dreads what might lie waiting in the shadows, terrible monsters and conspiracies ready to extinguish her kin. When the Kuni reported that something had changed in the heart of Shadowland, Sachiko's paranoia just switched from one side of the Wall to another. Any threat to her family would come from the other Clans; in her mine she faces an entire Empire of conspiracies.

Skirmishes have started between the Crab and their neighbors. Sachiko wants to be sure that others respect and fear the Sons of Hida and nobody will ever dare to raise a hand against her clan. The Lion want to take the Imperial Legions assigned to Crab lands; perhaps a little war could make of them an example to the rest of Rokugan.

Trouble

There is great concern about who will be the next Clan Champion, as Sachiko's two sons are ill-fitting as commanders; they are both great warriors and soldiers but with only a brain cell between the two of them. Sachiko's daughter is a vicious officer, but she married into the Hiruma; her husband is a cunning and ambitious man obsessed with retaking Shiro Hiruma, who will probably use her wife championship for his own designs. The Crab wish to marry some great samurai-ko general to one of the sons of the Champion. Sadly, the Lions don't have the best of relationship with the Crab, as they keep requesting that Imperial Legions be moved from Crab to Lion lands. Perhaps a famous heroine will raise from another clan and marry into the kuge of the Crab.

Allies

Decades of profitable trade deals have fortified the friendship between the Crab, Mantis and Tortoise into a full-fledged alliance. The Hiruma worked hard to maintain the alliance with the Unicorn, but relationships have been cold ever since the Crab refused to support any of the three factions fighting over the Dragon Heart Plain. Sachiko is suspicious of everyone, but she has some leeway with her old clan and signed an official alliance two Winter Courts ago; she hopes that the Scorpion soon find themselves embroiled in a war and provide the Crab with the excuse they seek.

Enemies

Due to their close relationship with the Crab, Daidoji troops stationed on the Wall found the new disposition of Crab forces unusual and reported such movements to the Daidoji daimyo; those messages were intercepted and Hida Sachiko expelled all the Daidoji units from her clan's lands. To this day the Daidoji still suspect the Hida are hiding something and are not acting in the best interest of the Empire. The Crane have started to take the side of the Lion in court; both clans work to diminish Crab's influence outside their lands.

The Shadowland remains the eternal enemy, even if strangely subdued.

The Other Families of The Crab

Hiruma Daimyo - Hiruma Soshitsu (M)

The Hiruma family is still haunted by the fall of their ancestral home, but they do not wallow in misery. Since Sachiko's sons failed to raise to the occasion and answer the needs of the Crab Army, the Hiruma daimyo often leads the Crab into battle and many of the high-ranking officers of the clan are Hiruma.

The Raikuto vassal family has seen a resurgence on the Hiruma. While most of their members swore fealty to the Yasuki after the loss of Shiro Hiruma, a dying branch remained, a bunch of old men and women that refused to switch families. It all changed with Hiruma Satoshi no Raikuto, a former ronin that was adopted by the House Raikuto of the Hiruma. Satoshi believed that the Crab would need full support of other Clans to recover what they lost to the Maw; while the efforts of the Yasuki were commendable, they did not truly represent the interest of the Crab, being merchants before anything else. The followers of Raikuto Satoshi have become a frequent sight in the courts of Great and Minor clans, but the Yasuki perceive this as a slight that added more friction to their already pretty stressed relationship with the rest of the Clan.

Kuni Daimyo - Kuni Rhyushi (M)

The Kuni lost much influence and respect with the rest of the Crab during Sachiko's Championship; she never forgot that the slayers of her husband came from the ranks of the Kuni. The Kuni have been forbidden of performing any experiment not sanctioned by Hida Satoshi herself or from venturing beyond the Wall. The ultimate insult, Sachiko has many of their ranking members inspected by Asako Inquisitors and members of the Kuroiban at a regular basis.

Kuni Rhyushi is a charismatic Kuni that has restored some of the lost faith in the family. Both of his parents were maho tsukai and he knew well the burden of living with dishonor and corruption in close relatives. He is blessed by Tengoku and a pious man, respected even outside the clan. Rhyushi has often appealed for Sachiko to relieve the Imperial Legions assigned to Crab lands; he has found enough signs of Taint in their camps to suspect that they will be a vector of corruption from Crab lands to the rest of the Empire. Sachiko's heart is stone and those warnings are not heeded; she still suspects Rhyushi's intentions and believes this suggestion to be a malicious plan to weaken the Crab.

Kaiu Daimyo - Kaiu Saoto (F)

The age of enlightenment and science of the Beloved Emperor Hantei XXVI touched even those under the shadow of the Wall. For the past decade the Kaiu have made improvements in Crab navy, building techniques and siege warfare. Using a strange gaijin creation smuggled by the Mantis into the Empire as inspiration, some ofthe Kaiu startd polemic experiments with steam power and crude automata. The brilliant and somewhat mad daimyo Kaiu Daikachi was burned alive by one of those experimental contraptions, but that has not diminished the enthusiasm of the Kaiu. His ingenuous, beautiful and adventurous daughter, Kaiu Saoto, took notes from his father mistakes and continued where he left off.

It has become a tradition since Saoto's ascension for young Kaiu to depart Crab lands after gempukku, in a pilgrimage of sorts. They seek to learn more about the new Crane irrigation techniques, the creative hydraulics systems that are being implemented in Imperial holdings and the secrets of the Agasha’s Forges, specially the potent form of alchemy they seem to have rediscovered. So far the other Clans have been very keen in protecting their secrets, but this “pilgrimage of scholars” seems to happen every year.

In a gesture of solidarity with the efforts of her followers, Kaiu Saoto has expressed her desire to marry the creative mind who mosts impresses her with his genius. So far all samurai have been loyal to their clans, but Kaiu Saoto is a family daimyo and an extremely beautiful and smart woman. The question is not if someone will spill his clans secrets to impress her, but when and whom.

Yasuki Daimyo - Yasuki Kawanari (M)

The Yasuki are not happy with Sachiko and the general course taken by the Crab clan in the last decades. The Clan Champion has been many times unreasonable with three generations of Yasuki leaders, demanding too much and showing open disdain upon the efforts of the Yasuki merchants. With empty coffers and looked down upon, the Carp is looking for less stormy waters and new ventures.

The cold feud with the Hiruma over House Raikuto seems to have been the tipping point. What was originally a seamless transition is now being contested, so many generations after the fall of Shiro Hiruma. What is that if not a slight for duties of the Yasuki towards the Crab?

As tensions arise, whispers abound that the Yasuki are courting Crane and Imperial delegates. Rumours say that Kawanari is planning to rejoin the Crane or to secede into a Minor Clan under protection of the Throne. Kawanari seems to be just waiting for the perfect opportunity - like say, the death of Hida Sachiko and the succession crisis that will follow. Rumours might be baseless or true, but one thing is certain: the Yasuki are hiring as many ronin as they can. When confronted about that, they are very keen in pointing out that since they lost their Hiruma yojimbo due to their current feud and they need all the muscle they can get.

Not all Yasuki are disgruntled. Those loyal to the Crab rally around the artisan vassal family of the Kano, specially the cousin of the Kano daimyo, Yasuki Ryute no Kano. A hard-boiled magistrate, son of Hantei XXV's second Empress’s first marriage and half-brother to the Imperial Heir, Ryute is a rare sort of Yasuki warrior and an effective enforcer. But are force and intimidation enough to keep the Carp within Crab's pincers or will Kano Ryute’s efforts ultimately fail?

What has the Clan of Lady Doji been up to? The answer might surprise you.

The State of the Clans - Crane

Crane Clan Champion - Doji Makasu (M)

The Crane are powerful, yet the clan has to share their rulership of the courts with specially active Phoenix and Scorpion courtiers. The Crane are powerful, yet every clan raids their lands each Summer - even their allies started to indulge in such “loans”, promising to repay later at Winter Court. The Crane are powerful, even when two styles of art divide the master sensei of their Academy. The Crane are powerful, even when they might have the smallest army since their inception.

The Throne is powerful, and the Crane have entwined their fates with it; Hantei XXV and his successor Hantei XXVI implemented serious reforms to the Imperial Bureaucracy and inter-clan politics that required the support of Doji Makasu's predecessors - his father and great grandmother. Even Hantei XXIV, who ruled under uncertain times and needed to ensure the stability of Rokugan, used the Children of Lady Doji as a crutch. The Crane have been assisting the Hantei for three generation, during which they selflessly sacrificed the interests of the clan.

Their sacrifice does not go unrewarded. While they don't keep the courts in lockdown like in most eras, Doji and Kakita courtiers can be found as scribes, sages and bureaucrats in minor positions all over the Empire, having mastered red tape as well as most Otomo. Crane have been trying new crops and irrigation techniques brought by the Unicorn, with incredible success; the Crane of this era are green-fingered and talented administrators that see the occasional raid as less costly than fielding armies of their own - and many of the Scorpion and Lion forager don't touch anything that isn't rice, keeping the new crops safe and prosperous. The Ju and Shinka style might cause division, but it a fertile creative ground, and the Crane still create many talented artists. The Crane army might be diminished, but their bushi don't suffer from lack of Glory; at each passing year more and more Crane join the Imperial Legions and retire from prestigious careers.

Doji Makasu is an old man, who has ascended into the position of Clan Champion quite late in life. Both him and his father grew in the shadow of a terrifying woman, and continued her policies. Makasu is not the brilliant administrator his father was, but a much more traditional Crane Champion. He is a warrior-poet that is very keen to have samurai to return to their "roots" as artisans of war, that make no distinction between court or battle. The Throne called and the Crane did their duty; now it is time to turn inwards and take care of the Clan.

Trouble:

The Crane have lost many of the prestigious positions they once held; the Imperial Advisor is the last stronghold they have in the Chosen of the Emperor. To counter this the Crane seek to secure the greatest number of high Status positions in the Imperial administration that they can, raising above the low-end of the bureaucracy that most of them seem to be assigned to.

Allies:

The Crane enjoy a strong alliance with both the Unicorn and the Phoenix clan. The War of the Broken Wagon was a dark period for the Crane, and they will try hard to prevent renewal of the hostilities between their strongest allies.

Enemies:

The Crane sigh and wishfully remember the days in which the only thing they needed to from the Mantis and Tortoise was piracy. The new Mantis Champion turned the Mantis into a cornerstone of the silk industry capable of competing even with the Crane and the Unicorn and the Tortoise's new generation is meddlesome and taking precious offices from Crane bureaucrats. Calling the Daidoji navy and scorching the high-seas is no longer an option, and the Crane must find a creative approach to deal with the unusual advances of these Minor Clans.

The Other Families of The Crane

Kakita Daimyo - Kakita Sabuso (M)

The Academy was almost thrown into civil war with the birth of the Ju and Shinka styles. The frequent in-fighting and duels have created one of the most sturdy and battle-ready generations of Kakita the empire has ever known.

When the smoke cleared, the bald and muscled Kakita Sabuso was left standing as Kakita family daimyo. Former sensei of the Academy and Daidoji by birth, he favored the Shinka school himself and fought many a duel for it. Personal tendencies aside, upon ascension he left a clear statement: whatever the field, whatever the artistic philosophy, the greatest master of an art has to be a Kakita. The current generation is working hard to fulfill the vision of their Lord; it is not easy, for this era has produced great talent across all Clans.

Kakita Sabuso was the Chef of the previous Crane Clan Champion, and considered the best pastry chef and brewer of his generation. As a sensei of the Academy and now as Kakita daimyo, his love for cooking has only increase as he rose in station. Sabuso is the sole force driving the new Crane cuisine, overseeing irrigation work, hand-picking crops from the Mantis and Unicorn stores and wandering across the Empire in search of new and inventive chefs. The Kakita daimyo has a famous and celebrated rivalry with Scorpion Champion Bayushi Saemon; while Sabuso has no shame in admiting that Saemon is the greatest cook, he finds his lack of imagination and strick adherence to tried-and-traditional cuisine waste of talent.

Sabuso latest creation was soshu fermented from sweet potatoes. The Crane have finished the first brewery dedicated specially to tuber-based spirits and is trying to make them popular amongst the Crab and Unicorn.

Asahina Daimyo - Asahina Chiaso (F)

The most remarkable thing about Asahina Chiaso’s daimyoship was how long it has lasted: more than forty years and ongoing. A direct descendant of Isawa Asahina, Chiaso is one of the rare ishiken born outside the Phoenix Clan. Her first degree cousin and previous daimyo fancied himself a prophet and declared the young Chiaso his heir. After getting killed in a meditation accident by an arrow he did not see coming, Chiaso ascended as Asahina daimyo. She suffered a long regency, secluded in the Asahina Temples - Temples she has yet to leave.

The Asahina were strongly shaped by this long-ruling daimyo; like Chiaso they are often secluded in temples and monasteries across Crane land, toiling over some theological mystery or seeking to perfect their craft so they can better honor the Fortunes. While Asahina art is always praised in the rare court it graces and its artisans seem to be the only ones that can produce anything without being labeled as Ju or Shikan, the Asahina are treated as a joke by the rest of the Empire. Many prominent Asahina caused quite a few scandals and scenes, shocked about how casually their contemporaries discussed Sins and how to face them, the very existence of the Great Schism or some more thought-provoking artistic statement. The critics were merciless; whenever a play or tale requires a gullible fool, chances are that character is an Asahina. Even if the other Crane families were quick to ripost with feather and blade against any less subtle insult, they too regarded their Asahina cousins as sheltered wunderkind that were unable to deal with the reality of Rokugan at large.

The marriage of Hantei Nichira to Asahina Chiaso forced the Empire to change their perception of the Crane shugenja family. With almost three decades of age difference between them, nobody expects love or children, but Nichira’s fame is enough to get any other Asahina on the spotlight. The Empire expected to be surprised and found that the Asahina delivered; the Asahina endure insult with grace and seem unshakable. When confronted with violence or hostility they endure and keep their cool.

It seems Rokugan will see a lot of the serene strength of the Asahina in the future.

Daidoji Daimyo -Daidoji Utamuro (M)

The peaceful era and lack of organized piracy have allowed the Daidoji to focus more in trade, with the Daidoji Trading Council dictating much of the family's actions during the last decade. The weakening of the Yasuki family granted them golden opportunities which they promptly seized.

Today the Ide and the Mantis are too strong as competitors, and the current economic model is no longer the most profitable for the Crane. Many sages of the Trading Council start to speculate that the Crane wealth and large rice reserves would allow them to profit from war; they point out to the merchantile strategies of the Ide, who managed to profit from the War of the Broken Wagon while most of the families of the three clans involved suffered dearly. The most senior members of the Trading Council find the notion distasteful and antithesis to the Crane mandate of using their wealth to feed the Body and Soul of the Empire; nevertheless, many merchant patrons are investing fortunes in weaponry, raw metals, and additional warehouses and silos.

Last year Daidoji Utamuro's uncle passed away from a fever, and the young sixteen years-old daimyo took the lead of the Protectors of Doji. He is a brash, naive warrior, that grew up intoxicated in the stories of brilliant tacticians and bloody conquest. Utamuro has yet to find his balance as a family daimyo, but as soon as he does, he will jump at the first opportunity he has to show the Glory of the Daidoji. Only his younger and more sensible pre-gempukku sister keeps him in check.

It is that time.

The State of the Clans - Dragon

Dragon Clan Champion - Togashi Echiko (F)

The role of the Dragon in the Great Schism would have had them declared pariahs or even traitors if it was not for the “Compassion” of the Seppun family; the Imperials appealed to the Great Clans and extended them a supporting hand. Hantei XXVI was willing to let the situation slide - until now.

As years passed, the Dragon have made no effort in reconciling with the rest of the Empire or to solve the spiritual crisis that has split even the Brotherhood. Whispers and rumours speak of internal strife or open defiance against the Emperor. The truth is much more complicated.

After the Schism, the Dragon Clan Champion performed seppuku to atone for his role in it; so the official story goes. In truth, the disjunction between Ningen-do, Jigoku and Tengoku has affected Togashi-no-kami deeply and he found out that his tamashii - those Ise Zumi capable of receiving his essence - would quickly wither away upon receiving the Divine Essence. For the first time since the Dawn of the Empire, Togashi fears for his existence.

The child Echiko, born from a previous tamashii and a diplomat to Kyuden Togashi, is the only remaining host for Togashi and the only one that has survived for more than a few weeks. In this sickly feeble body, Togashi is unable to discover what caused this disjunction and lacks the means to restore himself to full power. Many Ise Zumi and confidants of the Champion wander Rokugan, looking for a “cure" for their Champion's illness; all while researching into the Spirit Realms and what might have changed in the Heavens.

Trouble:

The Dragon have been cast out by the Chrysanthemum. This makes moving across the Empire very difficult, unless one is an individual under the protection of the Miya or Seppun families. Very few friends of the Dragon remain, gone are the days in which Tokoro appreciated the Dragon above all Clans. Many seek Dragons to vent their frustrations or feud with them in a foolish attempt to prove their loyalty to the Beloved Son of Heaven. The situation is bad enough that most Dragon prefer to disguise themselves as ronin.

Your typical Dragon samurai is not interested in big political maneuvers or ending the mess that is the Great Schism; they worry foremost about the survival of their Clan and their Champion. They scrounge the land for answers and try using what little influence they still have to keep the Imperial Legions from marching into Dragon lands.

Allies:

The Dragon are short on allies and friends - even the loyal Dragonfly clan is trying hard to sever ties with them. Still, clever diplomacy has earned the Dragon secret pacts that allow their survival.

The restored Hiruma branch of House Raikuto has managed to get an underground supply line going all the way to the Dragon village of Toi Koku, selling the estranged clan rice at premium-price and growing rich with smuggled gold. The Crab allies of the Mantis and Tortoise provide the funds and food supporting this deal, getting their own fat share of profit.

Enemies:

While most clans dislike and are suspicious of the Dragon, only two are openly hostile. The Scorpion, usually so close to the Dragon, often target the source of the Great Schism with extreme prejudice. The Soshi-Kitsuki feud, the foiled attempts of the Shosuro daimyo to slay Hantei bastards under Dragon protection and even the Clan Champion lobbying serve only to keep the two clans estranged.

The Lion, always eager to chase glory and to prove they are still relevant as the Right Hand, see the Dragon as an easy mark. If not for the military strength of the Mirumoto and their own complicated internal situation, the Lion would have already marched into Dragon lands - Imperial sanction or not. If the Lion manage to stabilize, the future would indeed look very grim for the Dragon.

The Other Families of the Dragon

Mirumoto Daimyo - Mirumoto Dairushi (M)

It is often said that Mirumoto Dairushi is only second to Mirumoto himself.

At this point it is important to recall that Mirumoto was a brute, an arrogant bully, a rude fellow, despicable, dishonorable and always ready to perceive insults and claim blood feuds. An all around nice fellow. Dairushi is all that and much more. The most warmongering daimyo in Rokugan, Dairushi is utterly obsessed with changing the military paradigm of the Empire and turn Mirumoto into the name everyone associated with “bushi”. No effort is too extravagant in his quest: Dairushi draws from the coffers of the clan an annual stipend of 20,000 koku which he uses to train and equip a deadly cadre of swordsmen that answers directly to him and whose sole role seems to be causing trouble and feuds across Rokugan; he has taught even ronin the Mirumoto-style, just to increase the number of representatives of Niten in Tsuma - and sometimes using dishonorable means to ensure a Dragon is the victor of the Topaz Championship. The Empire never forgave Dairushi for was his messy intervention in the War of the Broken Wagon and the many war crimes committed during the long conflict. He shrugs and accepts the infamy; nothing is too much to prove Mirumoto's superiority.

The cruel irony is that Dairushi is a poor strategist and tactician, and his sole skill seems to be with the sword. Dairushi is secretly jealous that there is no Dragon amongst the most celebrated generals of the Empire. If someone was to offer him the means to change that...

Kitsuki Daimyo - Kitsuki Naofumi (M)

Naofumi was a prodigy student of the Kitsuki Investigators, tasked with sharing the secrets of his family with the ronin Tokoro; in exchange Tokoro instructed Naofumi in iaijutsu. As both were equally talented in the Method and the Art, a healthy rivalry bloomed between the two of them.

When Tokoro seized the Throne, Naofumi competed for the Emerald Championship, and while he lost to Hantei Nichira, he was recruited into the Emerald Magistrates. Naofumi hoped that the Emperor would favor his training, but found that little changed in Rokugani legal practices. Realizing that the Kitsuki Method would never be taken seriously unless backed with steel, Naofumi returned to Dragon lands and founded the Kitsuki Justicar dojo.

The services of Naofumi and his students for the Dragon and the Empire saw him rewarded with the title of Master of Justice and eventually chosen as the new daimyo of the fledging family. Even after the Schism, the Kitsuki Justicars of Naofumi are the few Dragon that are allowed to traverse the Empire unmolested and still receive some respect from the Emperor. It is not all sunshine and rainbows: Naofumi never forgave the Soshi family for their role in murdering Agasha Kitsuki and uses most of his political power to perpetuate the blood feud between the two families.

Agasha Daimyo - Agasha Satomi (F)

The rediscovery of the secrets of bubun by Agasha Daijoku have radically changed his family. Bubun expanded the limits of what the Agasha thought possible to accomplish through alchemy, revealing secrets of matter and shocking insight into the nature of the Elements. Daijoku increased the size of the tunnels under Kyuden Agasha and created the most advanced place of science and learning in Rokugan - the Forge of Forges.

Daijoku’s daughter and student, Agasha Satomi, took control over both the Forge of Forges and the family leadership after her father passed into Yomi. While Satomi and her husband are wise and competent administrators and both have an amazing affinity with harmonics, metallurgy and an experimental form of gem-based magic, their knowledge of bubun is nowhere close to Daijoku's.

Many of the greatest experts in bubun worked outside Dragon borders and were surprised by the Great Schism. Much of their unique knowledge was lost forever, labeled as blasphemy, their work destroyed or captured by enemies of the Dragon. Satomi fears that they will never recover from this blow and the Agasha will forget all they recovered about bubun in a pair of generations.

There is one last master of bubun, a ji-samurai artisan called Agasha Heng that used to serve the Emperor himself at Night Court. A grandson of Agasha Daijoku, but descended from his involvement with a ronin alchemist and thus, from a dishonorable branch, Heng might be the last chance to preserve this knowledge. But if even half the rumours surrounding Heng are true, perhaps it is better for Agasha Satomi to just let bubun be forgotten.

Hear Me Roar.

The State of the Clans - Lion

Lion Clan Champion - Matsu Hideo (M)

Both the Ikoma Histories and the Akodo War College hold extensive reports on the Hideo Reforms, a series of unpopular and spartan measures that were necessary to transform the Lion from their pre-Return days into something more familiar to 12th Century audiences; a force capable of remaining relevant as Right Hand of the Emperor and challenging the Unicorn supremacy. No longer having access to the rich lands of the Ki-Rin, the Lion saw famine and civil war and almost destroyed themselves with internal strife. In the chaos arose Matsu Hideo, a grizzled veteran of many battles. He has beaten rebel after rebel, surprised assassin after assassin, and even seemed impervious to the boldest plots.

It was under his leadership that the Lion rebuilt their former glory. It was by his mandate that every plot of land was to be used for its full potential, every heimin life taken repaid with interest, and every grain of rice accounted for. Logistics had to precise or heads would roll. Opposition was brutal, but Hideo was relentless in purging the clan of discontent and had zero tolerance for wave-men and other fringe elements.

After an ironclad rule, succession of the Championship seems safe, as Matsu Hideo's eldest son, a twelve-years old prodigy of the Akodo War College, will marry a girl from the Akodo kuge and take up the mantle of Championship. Hideo is already making plans for his well-deserved retirement.

Trouble:

The Schism has fragmented the Lion and left them unsure about what is expected from them as Right Hand of the Emperor. Both the Emperor and the Seppun family have been lobbying for support from the Lion on these delicate spiritual matters, but so far the Lion have kept their distance and limited themselves to squashing riots. They have not been idle.

In the 3rd day of the Month of the Goat, an unknown invasion force appeared on Lookout Mountain. After two costly weeks of battle, the threat was successfully contained. Little is known about these attackers, except that they are furious humanoid spirits led by feline-like monsters and those that perish against them would end up joining their bloodlust-filled ranks. The Lion have kept the situation under close wraps - to the rest of the Empire, they have been performing especially brutal “training exercises”, which is disturbing enough on its own. The Kitsu whisper theories about betrayers of their family and the unspeakable act that they did after the Unicorn returned - erasing the names of those defeated in battle against the Sons of Shinjo and dooming their souls to eternal war, torn asunder from the kharmic wheel. There was a desperate plan to erase their previous mistakes, but that ended when the Hunters were released.

The Lion seek more information on this new threat, and they would also like to have the backing of the Imperial Legions to keep their borders safe while dealing with the invasion - a situation that is found very unusual by the rest of Rokugan, as Lion usually provide manpower to the Legions instead of drawing from it. Obtaining the Imperial Chancellor was a boon for the Lion, and they want to get a more permanent foothold in the capital as reward for their role keeping order - at the very least, a district governed by a Lion samurai.

Finally, the Shimizu family has been lost to the Dark Brother and will stop at nothing in their efforts to destroy the Lion from within.

Allies:

The Hantei, the Legions, the Emerald Office and the Otomo, they all cater to the Lion and thrive on their support - which has been gladly given. In return, they have protected the Right Hand at court and defended their interests against vicious attacks from Phoenix, Scorpion and Crane.

Maho-tsukai all over the Empire owe a lot to the Shimizu family, and they are always apt to help the Shimizu and their dark master.

Enemies:

The Crab have been taunting the Lion for too long, and the two clans have been preparing for an inevitable showdown. Right now the Lion is very busy, but the Crab might not be willing to wait until things calm down. Some military analysts of the Crab even suggest that the exercises of the Lookout Mountain are just the first phase of Lion preparations to attack the Clan of Hida.

The Unicorn have been encroaching on Lion territory since their arrival, and the Right Hand has fully regained confidence in their military machine with the Hideo Reforms. Law prevented the Lion from joining the War of the Broken Wagon and they resent the Dragon for stealing a spotlight that was theirs by right; if the Unicorn are involved in a new war, at least one or two Lion families will try to ally themselves to the opposing side.

Other Families Of the Lion

Ikoma Daimyo - Ikoma Toshiyuki (M)

A tall, dark, green-eyed and mysterious man of a certain age, Toshiyuki is considered by many the most desired man in the Empire. When not breaking hearts all over the Empire, Toshiyuki is seen sighing about the latest Imperial Edict and wondering what madness the future holds.

Hantei XXVI makes the Ikoma daimyo's life a living Jigoku, and Toshiyuki is working hard in white-washing all of the Emperor's actions and juggling all the facts with convenient lies. There is not a single mention in the Histories about either his First Concubine or the Schism, and Toshiyuki has no idea how to justify the contradictions that keep defying his creativity. The Ikoma have been working close with the Shosuro in keeping the issue of the bastards of Hantei XXV in check - a matter about which Toshiyuki avoids making too many questions about, delegating any “purging” to his Scorpion counterparts.

The Seppun daimyo has made subtle moves towards Toshiyuki, dropping implications that he would just make certain decisions of the Hantei XXVI disappear upon ascension to the Throne, making the Ikoma's job much easier. Those letters always leave Toshiyuki tempted. But then he remembers that there are two Lion samurai suspected of being Imperial bastards and wonders if they could be shaped into useful puppets.

Kitsu Daimyo - Kitsu Hatsuyo (F)

There is some sort of disturbance in the universe, the balance between the different Spirit Realms disrupted. Many feel the imbalance but cannot understand it, but the priests of the Lion are painfully aware. The Kitsu family has been working hard to discern more about the spirits of Toshigoku and their cursed Tsuno cousins, trying to understand why they have invaded Ningen-do in such numbers and at this precise timeframe; they also dare to venture into other Realms in search of answers about the changes in the cosmos. They would never admit Regret, but many Kitsu believe the Legacy of the Forge and the toshi spirits to be their fault and responsibility; it is their duty to contain them in a more permanent manner or see to their salvation.

Their efforts have been thwarted time after time; someone or something is out there, hunting Kitsu that reach too close to the truth. The names and identities of their victims are erased, disappearing from records and memory - and denied Yomi. The Fortunes are merciful and the attacks of these “Hunters" have waned before they destroyed the entire Kitsu family.

Kitsu Hatsuyo's own father and previous daimyo has fallen prey to the Hunters, leaving her to command the fates of the Kitsu. The young shugenja often wonders why Ancestors picked her for leadership of the family; after all she is neither talented not related to anyone important.

Akodo Daimyo - Akodo Noru (M)

The young but calm Akodo Noru might not be the Champion of the Lion, but Hideo trusts implicitly in his ability to lead the armies of the Clan in battle. Though Noru lacks ambition, he is famous and along with names like Nichira and Ichezo, is considered one of the Five Tiger Generals, the best commanders of the current generation. Ever modest, Noru dismisses such praise, as he is a general of peace, untested and undeserving.

The Siege of Lookout Mountain has proven that Noru deserves all the praise he is given, and more. Noru’s scouts quickly answered to Kitsu omens and assessed the situation. The general himself then promptly marshalled the entire Akodo family. They have been holding the line for seasons against an enemy that does not tire, does not hunger, does not feel pain, does not stop once killed, and wields strange magics. Noru's tactical acumen and on-the-fly strategies have thwarted the invasion force every single time, a testament to his training and skill.

However, Noru is near the breaking point. He needs to be at his best every waking hour and has little chance to rest. So far he has not faltered, and as long as he keeps getting all the support he needs, he will hold the line. Resisting the invasion is stressing the fruits of the Hideo Reforms to their limits, and the Lion might eventually be forced to turn to outsider assistance.

Shimizu Daimyo - Shimizu Hattoko (F)

Nursed with tainted milk and chants to the glory of Fu Leng, every single Shimizu is a pawn of Him That Should Not Be Named.

The family fell into darkness during the rule of Shimizu Tamayu. After the arrival of the Unicorn, the ambitious Shimizu not only attempted to seize land from other families but also tried to make a gambit for Championship of the clan during the Lion's civil wars. Defeated, Tamayu turned to maho and gave his name to an oni, saving himself but dooming his entire family. For this dark bargain, the Shimizu managed to turn the tables on other families and managed to seize the most fertile of Lion lands - forcing the other families to agree with their terms or starve, keeping his life and conquests.

For outsiders, the Shimizu are the most powerful family of the Lion - untouched by disgrace, their lands have been heavily fortified, no words of distress or disorder within their borders. Matsu Hideo sees them as model samurai, and often relies on the Shimizu to keep peace within their borders and pay their considerable taxes - which they apparently do. As everyone else has more urgent matters to handle, the Shimizu are often left to themselves.

Just as they prefer.

In cellars bellow their palaces and castles, Tamayu no Oni gathers an army of tsukai to destroy the Lion Clan and wage war against Hantei XXVI. The Shimizu feed and protect them, slowly bidding their time.

Shimizu Hattoko is the perfect pawn of Tamayu no Oni; a weak-willed woman that has been fully indoctrinated and devoted to Fu Leng. Tamayu no Oni itself is often disguised as her (dead) husband or sensei, accompanying the Shimizu Daimyo wherever she goes. Half-mad and gullible, Hattoko believes that she is actually the daughter of the coupling of the demon with the wife of the previous daimyo. A twisted and wretched creature, she exists only to fulfill the designs of her Oni “father”.

The Shimizu believe the time to strike is approaching, the coming year or the next. Using captured Kitsu shugenja, Tamayu no Oni has made a bargain with the Tsuno. Alongside Shimizu Hattoko, the Tsuno have planned their invasion, sharing ways of creating nightmare oni in exchange for priceless information given by the Shimizu. Hattoko has had limited but important success in using these oni, and is currently looking for an opportunity to start a new civil war, fully aware that it would cause the Siege of Lookout Mountain to be lifted.

Hattoko will see the Lion Clan destroyed. Everything else is secondary.
