I'm for Hal being sort of a grizzled, aging trainwreck. If you aren't just going to make him the dude from The New Frontier except that he's lived up into this time period through ring shenanigans, having him be a mess is way more appropriate. Johns tried this route, but I don't think it particularly worked (especially after deaging him in the New 52) because he'd never go far enough with it. This Hal looks like he's dealing with a lot... maybe he never quite got back into things after Sinestro's betrayal. Who knows. But he definitely feels like a guy who is hiding a lot of stuff underneath his exterior, compared to the dude who is basically an open-book and a mild himbo. I had a realization a little while back that Marvel should just give him the Squadron Supreme property and let him do whatever. It'd be way more appropriate for what he wants. True, but the trailer hints at a lot of stuff beyond just "small town corruption". We get shots of a guy putting a high-tech gun to John's head, and those burnt-out holes look less like "explosions" and more like impact craters. I'm guessing that there is something going on here that is harder to see, and flashing green uniforms will make it more difficult to find out what is going on. You gotta be able to overcome great fear. The one weakness of a ring is fear; if you can't wrangle that, you can't ring-sling. Admittedly this means that you can get some... less savory characters in the mix. But that's also the fun of the Green Lantern Corps as a concept: just because you can overcome great fear doesn't mean you are necessarily a fantastic person. Honestly kind of hoping for Kroloteans, but it could be any number of aliens. Hell, we could even be dealing with a subtle Starro invasion.
