Last day to preorder Ptolus - should I?

Mr. Draco

First Post
I've been following Ptolus and the web updates on and off for a while now, but I never quite hit that 'preorder' button. Now it's the last day left, and I still haven't made up my mind.

So, Enworld, what should I do? Is Ptolus really worth the price tag? I want to say that it is, but I guess right now I just need some convincing.

It does have a hefty price tag. I floundered on that basis for a while. My wife finally convinced me by telling that if I didn't order it, I would regret it later.

It won't be signed and numbered, but the Delver's Guild access is the cherry on top.

Peace and smiles :)

I guess you just have to ask yourself if the price is worth it for you.

Personally I think that it is and as such I preorded a couple of months ago. If you do want to get it then I think that preordering is the best way to go. You may pay a little bit more for it but you will guarantee yourself a copy and you get all the little extras that go along with it (such as the Delver's Guild access as suggested by Jaws).

The reality is that once it sells out there will be no reprints. Monte has publicly stated that there will only be the one printing and there will not be a "special edition" or anything like that as we saw with Arcana Unearthed/Arcana Evolved. The only way you can get Ptolus once it sells out is via PDF.

Some will disagree with this approach, but try this: look at your bookshelf. How many campaign settings are there on it? How many of those have you used to your satisfaction? How many could you have done without?

Now decide whether you want another one.

For some people this factors in, for others it doesn't. I own more 3E material than I'll ever use - I've still gotten satisfaction from it, by reading it. There's also the sense that Ptolus might provide more quality than the previous settings that might take up shelfspace.

Take a look at the flavor. Consider how close Praemal is to your ideal vision of a game world. For me, the planet (not just the city of Ptolus) is quite clearly going to be the framework for the games I DM for decades to come. No regrets about preordering back in January.

I see this stated a lot on forums and it's close, but not 100% accurate. Ptolus is indeed not a "special edition" of some other book. It is the book. There won't be a "trimmed down" or a "even more deluxe" version later. Frankly, I wouldn't know how to realistically do either option anyway.

However, unless it was after a long night of drinking with Mel Gibson one night, I'm pretty sure I've never stated that there will be only one printing. That said, I don't think there will be additional printings, because demand would have to be extraordinarily high to make it worth it (this is an expensive book to print, as you can imagine). Publishers try to gauge accurately what the demand for a book will be and print exactly that number. It's a costly mistake to do otherwise, because two print runs of 10,000 copies each (for example) costs much more than a single print run of 20,000 units of any book.

So if Ptolus does go to a second printing, don't mock me for doing something I said I wouldn't do. Mock me for guessing wrong. I usually keep a policy of never say never (when possible or appropriate) and in this case I have indeed never said never.

Thanks to those of you who said nice things. All I can say is, just wait until you actually see the book for real! I'm very excited for people to finally see it.

My apologies Monte. I didn't mean to put words into your mouth. I thought that you had said that there wouldn't be a reprint of Ptolus but I stand corrected. :o

I only mentioned it because of all of the hoo-ha going on in the thread about Rappan Athuk: Reloaded. I didn't want to see a similar thread happen with Ptolus with people complaining that they weren't told that this would be their one and only chance to get a copy.

I can edit my previous post if you want.
